File | Photo Credit: ANI The Gujarat Cabinet on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) granted in-principle approval to the ambitious ‘Gujarat Wire-Free City Mission’, a statewide initiative aimed at shifting overhead electricity distribution lines underground across urban areas by 2030. Announcing the decision after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, government spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani said the project is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing smart, green and resilient cities. Under the mission, all 17 municipal corporations and 151 municipalities in Gujarat will be covered in a phased manner. The State Government has approved an initial allocation of ₹500 crore for the first phase of implementation. According to the government, the project will involve the undergrounding of more than 14,600 circuit kilometres of high-tension (HT) overhead power lines and over 31,400 circuit kilometres of low-tension (LT) distribution lines across urban areas. Highest allocation, so far: PGI allocated Rs 2,559.65 crore, Rs 141.79 crore more than 2025 | Chandigarh News

The Centre has allocated Rs 2,559.65 crore to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh in the Union Budget 2026-27, an increase of Rs 141.79 crore (4.4%) over Rs 2,400 crore, the revised estimates of the previous financial year. In the 2025-26 fiscal, the PGI was allocated a budget of Rs 2,417.86 crore; Rs 2,400 crore in 2024-25, and Rs 2,225 crore in 2023-24. Thus, the Rs 2,559.65 crore allocation is the highest so far. The 2026-27 budget is aimed at meeting expenses related to patient care, staff salaries and infrastructure development at the institute. Of the total allocation, Rs 390 crore has been earmarked for the creation of capital assets, including new buildings, medical equipment and machinery. An amount of Rs 1,450 crore has been allocated under grant-in-aid for salaries, while Rs 550 crore has been provided under grant-in-aid (general) to meet operational expenses. However, in the government’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat,” cities seem to be conspicuously absent. What was allocation for urban India? The total outlay for urban development stands at ₹96,777 crore, higher than last year’s Budget proposal of ₹82,576.57 crore. However, if a modest inflation rate is taken into consideration, there is actually a fall in the outlay. The Revised Estimate (RE) suggests that only ₹63,669.93 crore will be spent by March, reflecting an underutilisation rate of 22.9%. One of the biggest shortfalls is in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) [PMAY(U)], which had an allocation of ₹30,170.61 crore for FY 2024-25 but saw a drastic cut in RE to just ₹13,670 crore.
