Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a progressive neuro-degenerative disorder that affects memory, thinking and behaviour, disproportionately impacts women. Studies suggest that nearly two-thirds of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s are women. Several factors contribute to this disparity, including biological, genetic and environmental influences. Besides, post-menopause, women are susceptible to hormone changes. The good news is there are preventive strategies that can work. Why are women more prone to Alzheimer’s? During menopause, women experience a sharp drop in estrogen levels. Estrogen protects brain cells, particularly neurons, which transmit signals. It also helps in functioning of the hippocampus, the brain’s memory centre. Low levels of this hormone accelerate brain ageing and trigger some changes leading to deposits of certain proteins called amyloid plaques and tau tangles. These lead to cell damage and prevent neurons from communicating with each other.
