New Delhi: The Congress’ claims of “tax terrorism” based on fresh notices from the Income Tax department have been strongly countered by sources in the government agency, who have pointed out that incriminating material had been seized and the assessment proceedings are taking place now because they would have been time-barred on March 31 this year. The sources said the Congress knew about the proceedings and had been given enough time to reply, including during the hearings in the Delhi High Court, which had denied the party relief.  The Congress, which had earlier claimed its bank accounts had been frozen after the Income Tax authorities had imposed a penalty of Rs 200 crore, had said on Friday that it had received a new tax notice from the department to the tune of Rs 1,800 crore. University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that it decided to increase the amount of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) and Post Doctoral Fellowship. The revised rates were considered and approved in the 572nd meeting held on September 20 and are applicable from January 1, 2023, the UGC said. The Calcutta High Court recently ruled that depriving a woman of her stridhan or any other economic or financial resources to which she is entitled constitutes domestic violence under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence (PWDV) Act, 2005. Justice Subhendu Samanta observed, “The deprivation of petitioner to any economic or financial resources to which the aggrieved person is entitled under any law is also domestic violence. In this case, it is the fact that the petitioner was deprived of her stridhan articles for a long which were under the custody of the opposite parties. This fact is tantamount to Domestic Violence”. The single-judge bench was hearing a plea by a widow, Nandita Sarkar, seeking monetary relief, including compensation from her in-laws. Nandita filed the plea against the order and judgment of April 17, 2018, passed by the Trial Court, Howrah.
