Punjab Police on Wednesday again arrested Amritpal Singh, chief of pro-Khalistan outfit Waris Punjab De and MP from Khadoor Sahib, in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) ended at a jail in Assam’s Dibrugarh, lawyers said. He will, however, continue to remain lodged in the same jail. The decision, issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs, comes in compliance with a Punjab and Haryana High Court directive dated January 23. The High Court had directed the Punjab government to decide within seven working days on the representation of Amritpal —an NSA detainee — seeking temporary release to attend the Budget session. The Budget session commenced on January 28 and will continue till February 13 in the first phase. The second phase will take place from March 9 to April 2. Amritpal’s counsel Imaan Singh Khara said they received state government’s reply on Monday. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea filed by radical preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh challenging his detention under the National Security Act. A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria asked Singh to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court with his plea. The top court asked the high court to decide his plea within six weeks. Punjab govt extends MP Amritpal Singh’s NSA detention by one year

On the recommendation of the District Magistrate of Amritsar, the State Home Department approved the extension of his custody for one more year. New Delhi: The detention of Amritpal Singh, who is an independent MP from Khadoor Shahib and a Khalistani sympathiser has been extended by another year by the Punjab government. He is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA) and has been serving there for the past two years.  Amritpal’s two-year detention period under NSA is set to complete on April 23. A team from the Punjab Police had prepared to bring Amritpal back to Punjab, but at the last moment, after deliberation between state and central security agencies, the decision was made to extend his detention under the NSA for another year. On the recommendation of the District Magistrate of Amritsar, the State Home Department approved the extension of his custody for one more year.
