Anbumani Ramadoss. File | Photo Credit: B. Jothi Ramalingam Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday (March 7, 2026) alleged that irregularities amounting to nearly ₹500 crore had taken place in regulated markets across Tamil Nadu over the past five years. In a statement, he said the State has 27 market committees overseeing 284 regulated markets, which are meant to facilitate the sale of farmers’ produce through a transparent auction system to ensure better prices for cultivators. He alleged that the officials allegedly split works into smaller projects below ₹5 lakh to bypass approvals and audits, citing a 2018 government order that allows market committees to undertake works costing up to that amount without prior permission. This method was allegedly used to show expenditure on activities such as compound wall construction, painting, flooring, and electrical works. He cited information obtained through the Right to Information Act, claiming that in Coimbatore district alone, market committees earned over ₹80 crore between 2021 and 2025, of which ₹76.47 crore was reportedly shown as spent, largely through …

I represent PMK, Ramadoss’ group a breakaway faction: Anbumani tells Madras High Court

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss’ estranged son Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday (February 2, 2026) claimed before the Madras High Court that only he represents the political party legally and that the group rallying behind his father was only a breakaway faction, which could not be considered as the party. Appearing before the first Division Bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, senior counsel N.L. Rajah, representing Dr. Anbumani, said, his father was trying to “snatch an order from the court behind his (Dr. Anbumani) back” without making his client a party to the case. The submissions were made during the hearing of a writ petition filed by the party founder seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Tamil Nadu to communicate the allotment of the ‘mango’ symbol to the party for this year’s Assembly election to his official address in Chennai. Since the founder had made only the ECI and the CEO as respondents to the writ petition, …

The AIADMK is on a weak footing

Expelled AIADMK veteran K.A. Sengottaiyan joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in the presence of party president and actor Vijay at Panaiyur near Chennai on November 27, 2025 Photo: X/@TVKPartyHQ via PTI Last week, veteran leader K.A. Sengottaiyan, who was formerly with the All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay in Tamil Nadu, which is set to go to the polls next year. Mr. Sengottaiyan, who is a former Transport and School Education Minister, was expelled from the AIADMK about a month ago. He felt sidelined by party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and resigned from his post as MLA of Gobichettipalayam constituency in Erode district before joining the fledgling TVK. The move did not surprise many people. Mr. Sengottaiyan had only two options: to either walk over to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or join the TVK. He would have probably found the first option unacceptable, having been trained in anti-DMK politics for years. When there was pandemonium in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on March 25, …

Anbumani violating all norms of political decency: PMK founder Ramadoss

S. Ramadoss | Photo Credit: M. Samraj Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday (November 6, 2025) expressed serious concern over his estranged son Anbumani “violating all norms of political decency.” He alleged that Mr. Anbumani was instigating violence against party functionaries “in collusion with his wife Sowmiya Anbumani.” Speaking to reporters at his Thailapuram residence near Tindivanam, Mr. Ramadoss said that it was he who started the PMK and its parent organisation, the Vanniyar Sangam. “I had committed a few mistakes in my political career and this included making Anbumani a Central Minister and the president of the PMK. While the party is being run in a peaceful manner now, an impression of a rift is being created amongst the public and other party cadre,” he said. “Barring a few, most members of the other camp [Mr. Anbumani’s] were groomed by me. People who called me ‘Ayya’ have, for some reason, joined the other camp,” he further said. Mr. Ramadoss said that he was pained to see that he and honorary president …

Anbumani criticises T.N. Transport Dept.’s proposal to operate private buses on contract basis during Deepavali

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday (October 22, 2024) urged the State government to drop the Transport Department’s proposal to hire and operate private buses on a contractual basis during the Deepavali festival, expressing concern that it would lead to privatisation. In a statement, he said the State government had announced last month that it would operate private buses on a contractual basis during festivals to cater to the needs of commuters. “Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar had recently announced that the Department would operate private buses by hiring them at ₹51.25 per kilometre on a rental basis for the Deepavali festival. Operating private buses on behalf of the State government under the guise of people’s convenience cannot be allowed,” Mr. Anbumani said. “Though the State government had said it would operate only a limited number of private buses, the reasons given by it are false. The private buses will be operated on a Gross Cost Contract basis. Initially, this system will be implemented only on additional buses. But in the future, it …

Anbumani raises concerns over pending infrastructure work in NCTPS-III

File photo of PMK leader Anbumani Ramdoss | Photo Credit: S.R. Raghunathan The 800-MW supercritical technology-based North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS)-III at Athipet in Tiruvallur district, which was commissioned in March this year, has not been put into operation to generate power to its full capacity due to pending infrastructure work, said Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday (September 5, 2024). In a statement, he said the NCTPS-III was inaugurated in a “hurried manner”, a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when vital infrastructure work – such as coal handling units, conveyor belts to carry coal to the thermal power station, and fly ash ponds to dispose of coal combustion residues – was yet to be established. “Currently, the NCTPS-III is being operated using liquid fuel to generate power, which increased the production cost to ₹13 per unit of electricity. However, the supercritical technology-based NCTPS-III is 6 percent more efficient than other thermal power stations and could generate one unit of electricity with 0.45 kg of coal at a …

Chennai: On May 28 last year, inside a banquet hall in Chennai, there was rapturous applause when then Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president G K Mani announced that it would be 52-year-old Anbumani Ramadoss to whom they are handing over the party his father S Ramadoss founded. Mani set a clear objective on the dias that day: to take the party to the next level in Tamil Nadu politics and form the government by achieving the mission PMK 2.0, they are handing over the responsibility to the next generation. Junior Ramadoss’ elevation from youth wing leader to becoming the chief of his father’s party was expected. A teary-eyed Ramadoss hugged his son and rallied the cadre to work to ensure that a PMK government is formed under Anbumani in Tamil Nadu in 2026. Eight months later, junior Ramadoss, a Rajya Sabha MP and former Union health minister, is working towards that. PMK, currently an NDA ally, is trying to experiment with the idea of going solo again – like they did in 2016 assembly elections …
