Indian athletics witnessed a historic day at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar as Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare shattered long-standing national records in the women’s long jump and men’s high jump, respectively. Ancy stole the spotlight by eclipsing Anju Bobby George’s 22-year-old national record in the women’s long jump. The 25-year-old from Kerala produced a stunning leap of 6.88m, surpassing the previous mark of 6.83m set by Anju during the Athens Olympics in 2004. The record had stood for more than two decades, making Ancy’s achievement one of the most significant moments in recent Indian athletics. Tejaswin Shankar to lead Indian challenge – Preview

The Indian athletics contingent is ready for its first major international test of the year at the 2026 Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin, China, scheduled from February 6 to 8. The 16-member Indian contingent will compete for the continental glory across 12 different disciplines including Long Jump, Triple jump and 60m races. This is the 12th edition of the continental showpiece with India having 68 medals in the past, with 16 golds, 21 silver and 21 bronze medals. India eyes a Top-3 finish India hasn’t found a podium finish at the Asian Indoor Championships since 2008, when the contingent clinched the title with 17 medals. Two-time men’s shotput champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor will lead a 17-member Indian contingent at the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, the Athletics Federation of India announced on Thursday. The squad features other experienced athletes like Tejaswin Shankar in heptathlon and Praveen Chitravel in triple jump, while also providing a launchpad to youngsters like long jumper Shahnawaz Khan, hurdler Tejas Shirse and others. In the women’s event, long jumper Ancy Sojan will mark her return after an injury layoff in the competition. Moumita Mondal will feature in two events, the 60m hurdles as well long jump. Ancy Sojan pips Shaili Singh at UAE Women’s Athletics Gala

Ancy Sojan pipped fellow Indian Shaili Singh to win the silver medal at the 2025 UAE Women’s Athletics Gala in Dubai on Sunday. While Sojan leapt a distance of 6.54m to finish second, Singh took home the bronze with a jump of 6.48m. Egypt’s Esraa Owis won the gold medal at a distance of 6.66m. The UAE Women’s Athletics Gala, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level meet, had a nine-member field in women’s long jump. Out of the nine, six athletes in contention were Indians. Apart from Sojan and Singh, India’s Moumita Mondal also finished in the top five with a best of 6.22m to finish fifth. Mondal had shot to fame at the 2025 National Games in Uttarakhand earlier this year, winning medals in both women’s 100m hurdles and women’s long jump within just minutes of each other. Ancy records PB, Vithya breaks 39-year-old MR

Asian Games medalist Ancy Sojan claimed the gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships with a big personal best while Vithya Ramraj broke the 39-year-old meet record on the final day on Monday. Ancy recorded her personal best of 6.71m in the women’s long jump placing her third in the all-time best jumps behind Shaili Singh (6.76m) and Anju Bobby George (6.83m). She won the Best Female Athlete award at the meet. Asian Games medallist Vithya Ramraj also erased the long-standing women’s 400m hurdles meet record. She crossed the finish line at 56.23 seconds which was better than the previous meet record of 56.80 seconds set by legendary sprinter PT Usha in 1985. Tamil Nadu’s Nithin cinched 200m gold with a meet record time of 20.66 seconds to be named best male athlete. Vikrant Malik won the gold medal in men’s Javelin Throw with 80.02m while Sachin Yadav won the silver with 79.80m. Seasoned long jumper Nayana James registered her new personal best to clinch the gold medal at the 3rd Indian Open Jumps competition at Anju Bobby High Performance Center, Bengaluru on Wednesday. Nayana jumped 6.67m in her second attempt to better her previous personal best of 6.55m. U20 World Championships silver medalist Shaili Singh came up with a season-best 6.40m jump to clinch the silver medal while Sushmita recorded a jump of 6.28m to finish on the podium. In the absence of Asian Games medalist Ancy Sojan, it was a clear battle between Nayana and Shaili for the top two places.
