Indian athletics witnessed a historic day at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar as Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare shattered long-standing national records in the women’s long jump and men’s high jump, respectively. Ancy stole the spotlight by eclipsing Anju Bobby George’s 22-year-old national record in the women’s long jump. Ancy Sojan pipped fellow Indian Shaili Singh to win the silver medal at the 2025 UAE Women’s Athletics Gala in Dubai on Sunday. While Sojan leapt a distance of 6.54m to finish second, Singh took home the bronze with a jump of 6.48m. Egypt’s Esraa Owis won the gold medal at a distance of 6.66m. The UAE Women’s Athletics Gala, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level meet, had a nine-member field in women’s long jump. Out of the nine, six athletes in contention were Indians. Apart from Sojan and Singh, India’s Moumita Mondal also finished in the top five with a best of 6.22m to finish fifth. Mondal had shot to fame at the 2025 National Games in Uttarakhand earlier this year, winning medals in both women’s 100m hurdles and women’s long jump within just minutes of each other. Asian Games medalist Ancy Sojan claimed the gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships with a big personal best while Vithya Ramraj broke the 39-year-old meet record on the final day on Monday. Ancy recorded her personal best of 6.71m in the women’s long jump placing her third in the all-time best jumps behind Shaili Singh (6.76m) and Anju Bobby George (6.83m). She won the Best Female Athlete award at the meet. Asian Games medallist Vithya Ramraj also erased the long-standing women’s 400m hurdles meet record. She crossed the finish line at 56.23 seconds which was better than the previous meet record of 56.80 seconds set by legendary sprinter PT Usha in 1985. Tamil Nadu’s Nithin cinched 200m gold with a meet record time of 20.66 seconds to be named best male athlete. Vikrant Malik won the gold medal in men’s Javelin Throw with 80.02m while Sachin Yadav won the silver with 79.80m.
