‘He can’t comment on the conditions here while sitting in Denmark’: BAI gen secy after Anders Antonsen pulls out of India Open | Badminton News

With the India Open coming under the scanner after Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt and had Anders Antonsen criticising the conditions with the latter even pulling out of the tournament citing ‘extreme pollution’ in New Delhi, Badminton Association of India general secretary Sanjay Mishra opened up about the recent controversies. Talking about World no. 3 Antonsen’s withdrawal, Mishra said to ANI that “I had a chat with the BWF. He (Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen) can’t comment on the conditions here while sitting in Denmark. Can I talk about Denmark’s conditions sitting here in India? Actually, he is a committed BWF player. The BWF committed players have to mandatorily play these big tournaments. His reason for withdrawal was not accepted by BWF and he was fined.” He also talked about the issues pointed out by Blichfeldt on Tuesday, where she called out the playing and training conditions at the IG Indoor Stadium, where the 2026 edition of India Open is being hosted – at a bigger arena compared to KD Jadhav Indoor stadium inside the same complex, where …

Anders Antonsen withdraws from India Open citing hazardous Delhi air quality

Anders Antonsen withdraws from India Open citing hazardous Delhi air quality

World No. 3 Anders Antonsen has once again refused to participate in the BWF India Open, citing extreme air pollution in New Delhi as the reason for his withdrawal. In an Instagram Story, the Danish star explained that he believes the city’s current environment is “not a place to host a badminton tournament” and revealed that the Badminton World Federation fined him USD 5,000 after his decision. Antonsen wrote: “Many are curious to why I have pulled out of the India Open for the 3rd consecutive year. Due to the extreme pollution in Delhi at the moment I don’t think it’s a place to host a badminton tournament. Crossing my fingers that it will be better in the summer when the World Championships will take place in Delhi. As a result BWF once again has fined me 5000 usd.” Experts and environmental monitors have highlighted that Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate in winter. Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) readings for the capital and surrounding areas have frequently remained in the “severe” to “hazardous” category, …

Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen on pulling out of India Open: ‘Don’t think Delhi is a place to host tournament due to extreme pollution’ | Badminton News

Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen on pulling out of India Open: ‘Don’t think Delhi is a place to host tournament due to extreme pollution’ | Badminton News

A day after women’s singles shuttler Mia Blichfeldt criticised conditions in New Delhi for the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament, her compatriot Anders Antonsen, current men’s singles world No 3, shared his reasons for pulling out of the event. “Many is (sic) curious to why I have pulled out of the India Open for the third consecutive year. Due to the extreme pollution in Delhi at the moment I don’t thinks it’s a place to host a badminton tournament,” Antonsen wrote on an Instagram story. The Dane had pulled out of India Open on January 4, even before the season-opening Malaysia Open, where he entered and lost in the semifinal against world No 1 Shi Yu Qi. Antonsen’s sharp criticism comes on the back of Blichfeldt calling out the playing and training conditions at the IG Indoor Stadium, where the 2026 edition of India Open is being hosted – at a bigger arena compared to KD Jadhav Indoor stadium inside the same complex, where the tournament had been held in the past few years. …

Lakshya Sen or HS Prannoy vs Anders Antonsen at Sudirman Cup? Fans ask two different AI models, get two opposite answers | Badminton News

Lakshya Sen or HS Prannoy vs Anders Antonsen at Sudirman Cup? Fans ask two different AI models, get two opposite answers | Badminton News

HS Prannoy has been lined up for the men’s singles game in India’s opening group round of the Sudirman Cup against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen at Xiamen, China. The order of play reads: Tanisha Crasto -Dhruv Kapila in mixed doubles vs Jesper xx – Amalie xx, as Indian captains shoulder the first challenge. Prannoy has been fielded against Antonsen (no Viktor Axelsen for Denmark) in second match. This is likely to start a huge debate, given Lakshya Sen is also in the squad. However India tends to think long-term and will most likely field Sen in a better matchup against Jonathan Christie in the Indonesia tie. The men’s doubles is a serious question mark for India next, with talented rookies Hariharan and Ruban set to take on Kim Astrup and Anders Sxxx. PV Sindhu slots in for the key fourth match – most likely pivotal against Line Kjaersfeldt, while Tanisha will be back on court against Natasha – Boje alongside Shruti Mishra in the final women’s doubles match. Sankar Subramanian stuns world No 2 Anders Antonsen in huge upset in Basel

Sankar Subramanian stuns world No 2 Anders Antonsen in huge upset in Basel

In the year PV Sindhu won the World Championships in Basel – beating Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in a scarcely believable scoreline – Anders Antonsen lost the men’s singles final 21-9, 21-3 in another result that made no logical sense. And in that very venue in Basel – St. Jakobshalle – Antonsen was at the receiving end of another massive defeat, late on Thursday night. India’s Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, ranked 64th currently, defeated the current world No 2 Antonsen 18-21, 21-12, 21-5 in a 66-minute contest. If the second game showed Sankar could push Antonsen to the distance, the decider scoreline was jaw-dropping. Antonsen was struggling with his radar for sure, missing the sidelines repeatedly and often misjudging the length of the shuttle on the backcourt, but it still is a remarkable feat for the Indian to beat one of the world’s best by that scoreline. And perhaps, Antonsen must have had flashbacks to playing Momota six years back because the Indian proudly models his game on the retired Japanese superstar. “Yes, I played defensive, …

Badminton: Anders Antonsen terminates contract of his coach who he claims was betting on another match in the arena | Badminton News

World No 3 men’s singles badminton player Anders Antonson said on Saturday that he is terminating the contract with his personal coach Joachim Persson with immediate effect after claiming that he had spotted the latter placing bets on matches, albeit ones not involving him. The Danish star, who has been as high as world No 2, took to Instagram to reveal his decision so as to avoid speculation around it. “The other day I by coincidence got to see my coach placing bets on one match taking place in the arena. As a coach of one player competing in the BWF, this is a violation,” he wrote. “As a player competing in the BWF you’re obligated to report such behavior as soon as it comes to your knowledge. Failing not to report such information would be a violation on the BWF code of conduct. I want to distance myself from this behavior and therefore the only option has been to report and terminate our agreement.” This is not the first time that Joachim Persson is …

All-England: How Lakshya Sen went from 2-8 down to defeat Anders Antonsen in a stunning fightback | Badminton News

When Lakshya Sen trailed 2-8 in the deciding third game in Birmingham on Thursday, there was a sense of deja vu. It was the same scoreline he was on a few days back in Paris. Then, it was the semifinal against reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn at the French Open. Then, Lakshya couldn’t arrest the slide as Vitidsarn ran away with it. Now, it was a second-round match against the red-hot Anders Antonsen at the All England Open, who hadn’t lost a match on tour till last week. Now, Lakshya could arrest the slide briefly to gather some control. Now, Lakshya Sen was able to turn it around late on for a stunning fightback to win 15 of thelast 17 points. How quickly things can change in sport. Lakshya overcame the fourth seed from Denmark 24-22, 11-21, 21-14 in a 80-minute thriller to reach the quarterfinals at the prestigious Super 1000 tournament. As Antonsen sent the shuttle wide on match point, Lakshya took a moment to let it sink in, went down on his knees …

All England badminton: Lakshya Sen makes short work of Magnus Johannesen to set up clash with another Dane, Anders Antonsen | Badminton News

One reason why the allure of the All England endures in these parts of the world is that no Indian has won it for a long time. Since 2001. It’s one of four annual Super 1000s. But top Indians have just not nailed the big occasion, when others don’t bother pretending that it’s just another event, and are always looking to peak at it. Saina Nehwal made the final in 2015, but Carolina Marin properly crushed her title hopes. Perhaps the most audacious charge was made by Lakshya Sen in 2022 – beating Sourabh Verma, Anders Antonsen, Lu Guang Zu and Lee Zii Jia, before Viktor Axelsen imposed his monster game. But no matter what the prologue has been to this year, or what the projections in an Olympic year might be, Sen perennially threatens to cause a stir at the All E. Amongst all the Indian men’s singles players, he looked likely to go the deepest after his run at the French Open. On Wednesday, he wrapped up a straight-games win over young Dane …

Anders Antonsen & his ambles and rambles towards taking on the Great Dane mantle in Badminton | Badminton News

The greatness-half of it is still work in progress. The Dane-ness, Anders Antonsen clarified to the BWF after winning the Malaysian Super 1000 title earlier last month, was never quite gone. He said his communication had been all scrambled when conveying to fans he’d left Denmark for Dubai, and was in fact, camped at Copenhagen where he had an apartment. The prodigal never left, the going-pro rebellion never bubbled. “It’s my mistake that it was thought I was moving to Dubai. But that actually never happened,” he would say. The Great Dane crown in recent years in mens singles badminton, has had some severely serious holders – from Peter Gade to Viktor Axelsen. Antonsen is expected to slip into the groove as next in line – train like a maniac, play a taut, controlled game like a champion, say clipped lines to the media revealing nothing just like the Chinese. Also, strut about and offer the Asian contenders regular reminders of the other continent with its doughty challengers, who are Norse code for pirates or …
