Election Commission extends SIR timeline for Andhra Pradesh, Haryana

The Election Commission on Tuesday extended the deadline for various activities under the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana. The poll authority wrote separate letters to the chief electoral officers of the two states. In both Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, the house-to-house visits by the booth level officers will continue till July 24, while the earlier deadline was July 14. The draft rolls in the two states were earlier scheduled to be published on July 21. Now, they will be published on July 31. The two states are part of phase 3 of the SIR rolled out on May 14. Once phase 3 is completed, the entire country, except for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, will be covered under the SIR rollout. The quake originated at 05:05:46 IST at a depth of 10 km, with its epicentre located at 16.805° N, 84.381° E, the NCS said. The event has since been classified as “Reviewed” by the agency. The epicentre was located about 227 km east of Kakinada and 275 km east of Rajahmundry, both in Andhra Pradesh, placing the quake well offshore in the Bay of Bengal. It was also recorded at distances of 282 km south of Berhampur and 367 km south-southwest of Puri, both in Odisha, and 355 km southeast of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh. Residents in Visakhapatnam, southwest of the epicentre, took to social media platforms including X and Reddit shortly after the quake, with several users confirming they had felt mild tremors around the time of the event. Two people from Andhra Pradesh were killed and three others from the state were hospitalised in Vietnam following a tourist boat capsize near Phu Quoc Island, sources in the Andhra Pradesh government said. The tour was organised by Vietnam-based Threeland Travel through local coordinating vendor Sai Vietnam. (Vietnam News Agency) The tourist speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized near Phu Quoc Island while returning to An Thoi Port, the sources further said. The accident claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists, while 21 others were rescued. Of the survivors, 17 were passengers, and four were crew members. Two remained in critical condition, and all 36 persons on board have been accounted for. “Preliminary information indicates that two persons from Machilipatnam are among the deceased. A bench of Justices Ravi Nath Tilhari and Subhendu Samanta upheld orders of the Visakhapatnam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, all of which had rejected the complaint filed by the petitioner against his advocate. “We are of view that the complaint filed by the writ petitioner against the lawyer/advocate under the Consumer Protection Act was not maintainable. The same has rightly been dismissed,” the court held in its order dated June 24. It relied upon the Supreme Court’s ruling in a case where it had held that a complaint alleging deficiency in service against advocates practicing the legal profession would not be maintainable under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
