Mumbai, The Bombay High Court has quashed a money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate against a Nagpur-based lawyer in connection with the alleged kickbacks involving former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh. HC quashes ED’s money laundering case against lawyer linked to ex-minister Anil Deshmukh A single bench of Justice Ashwin Bhobe, in the order passed on Monday and a copy of which was made available on Tuesday, said no case is made out against advocate Kishore Dewani. The case lodged against the applicant deserves to be quashed to prevent abuse of the process of law, the HC said. The court noted that the ED failed to show any connection between Dewani’s property transactions and the proceeds of crime allegedly generated in the corruption case against Deshmukh and others. The money laundering case was lodged after the Central Bureau of Investigation registered an FIR against Deshmukh and others alleging extortion and corruption. Dewani moved the HC seeking to quash the ED’s money laundering case claiming innocence and that he was implicated in the case. …

New Delhi: A fresh case has been registered against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, former Special Public Prosecutor Praveen Pandit Chavan and others. The Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI has accused them of trying to frame BJP leaders. In 2022, then Leader of Opposition Fadnavis had handed over a pen drive to the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker, which contained audio and video recordings that were allegedly evidence.   It was alleged that Special Public Prosecutor Pravin Pandit Chavan was seen conspiring with high-ranking police officers and hatching conspiracy to frame prominent BJP leaders. The video recording clearly shows that Pravin Pandit was involved in filing false cases against the applicant and other BJP leaders, the BJP had alleged. The CBI had registered a preliminary inquiry and started investigating the case. After nearly two years of investigation, a case was lodged on July 31. Former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh on Monday got a bail from the Bombay High Court in a corruption case filed by the CBI, news agency PTI reported. Deshmukh, however, is unlikely to walk out of the jail as the central probe agency has sought time to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. The 74-year-old leader is lodged at the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai. He was jailed last year amid allegations against him by former Mumbai top cop Parambir Singh.
