Jyothi Yarraji clocks 12.85s in her first international meet of the year

India’s Jyothi Yarraji continued her encouraging return from injury by clocking 12.85 seconds to win the women’s 100m hurdles at the WACT Bronze EA-IFAM Outdoor Meet in Oordegem, Belgium, on Saturday. Competing in her first overseas meet since recovering from an ACL injury, the national record holder produced her fastest time in three years and moved another step closer to her personal best of 12.78s. The performance follows her successful comeback at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in June, where she won gold in 12.99s after more than a year on the sidelines. The 2023 and 2025 Asian champion is now building momentum ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, where she will look to upgrade the silver medal she won in Hangzhou. Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur registered the fastest 100m time ever by an Indian on foreign soil after clocking a personal best of 10.14 seconds at the Fast Arms Fast Legs meet, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event in Germany. The 23-year-old finished second in the final on Friday, improving on the 10.19 seconds he had recorded in the heats earlier in the day. The 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships is slated to begin at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from Wednesday. The 5-day event will have 45 medal events and will also serve as a final qualifier for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026. A few of the star athletes, Jyothi Yarraji (Hurdles), Parul Chuadhary (Steeplechase) and Gulveer Singh (Middle Distance Running), will return to the domestic competition. Gulveer and Parul were training outside India and are now returning to India to confirm their place in the Indian team, while Jyothi is returning after a long break due to an ACL injury. Meanwhile, two of India’s medal hopefuls, Sachin Yadav and Avinash Sable, are set to miss this event as they are currently going through injury rehabilitation. Indian clinched two medals – a silver and a bronze – on the opening day of the 2026 Asian Relays Championships in China on Saturday. The mixed 4x100m quartet of Pranav Gurav, Tamanna, Animesh Kujur, and Sneha SS were the first to bag a medal, winning bronze with a timing of 41.47s. National record holder Gurindervir Singh to lead the 29-member strong Indian contingent for the second edition of the Asian Relays C’ships to be held in Shangyu, China, on June 20 and 21. The Indian contingent will compete in all six relay events in China, says AFI president Bahadur Singh. “The competition in China will be a good opportunity for athletes to showcase their potential at the continental level,” he added. The next edition of the continental competition has been awarded to India, which will be held in Chandigarh, following the decision taken at the Asian Athletics Association Council Meeting in Hong Kong. “The international competition will give sports fans an opportunity to witness top athletes in action on the home soil,” says the AFI president.
