He said jokingly, “What stood out for me before even watching the film, Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) went to Kutch to shoot with a head full of hair, came back bald.” He then added, “First thing was the way they were shooting the film. We heard that they were doing sync sound, and sync sound was something that was absent at that time. I think it restarted with Lagaan, and Dil Chahta Hai.” Kashyap said the film’s technical and production approach had a profound impact on him …

‘Ranbir Kapoor gets upset when I talk about Bombay Velvet’: Anurag Kashyap says he didn’t dare meet Ranbir-Anushka Sharma after film flopped | Bollywood News

A decade ago, Bombay Velvet was one of the most anticipated films of the year. The project promised a rare convergence of two distinct worlds: Anurag Kashyap, often hailed as the messiah of independent cinema, was making his first major leap into commercial filmmaking, while the film boasted a big studio backing and stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. However, the film turned out to be a major commercial disaster, so much so that Kashyap vowed never to make a film with stars again. The experience also strained his relationship with the lead actors, especially Ranbir Kapoor. In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Kashyap opened up about how Ranbir gets pissed off whenever the film comes up in the media. “I think Ranbir was very upset that, and he keeps saying, ‘Why do you keep talking about Bombay Velvet? Just ignore it. The film didn’t work, it didn’t work, but you don’t have to talk about it all the time.’ But people ask me questions all the time, how can I just ignore that?” …

Anurag Kashyap reveals Bombay Velvet was written for Ranveer Singh but studio sold it on Ranbir Kapoor’s name: “It took me a year to…’ | Bollywood News

Ranveer Singh is riding high on the success of Dhurandhar, which has not only emerged as the highest-grossing film of his career but has also surpassed the box office collections of his immediate contemporary Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest hit, the 2023 blockbuster Animal. The milestone has reignited conversations around the long-standing comparison between the two actors, often viewed as the defining superstars of their generation. While the rivalry narrative has persisted for years, the truth is more nuanced. Over the past decade, Ranveer Singh surged ahead with a string of successful films, while Ranbir Kapoor experienced a comparatively uneven phase, marked by several box office disappointments. Among them was the highly ambitious Bombay Velvet, directed by Anurag Kashyap. Interestingly, in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Anurag Kashyap revealed that Bombay Velvet was originally conceived with Ranveer Singh in mind. However, the studio backing the project pushed for Ranbir Kapoor instead. Recalling the change, Kashyap said, “The film was not a high-budget film initially. It was sold at a very high budget, and it took me time …

Anurag Kashyap says Boney Kapoor was so eager to sign him he offered to buy him any flat he wanted before Paanch’s release: ‘Point your finger at any building…’ | Bollywood News

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for cult classics like Gangs of Wasseypur and Black Friday, never had an easy start in the Hindi film industry. A boy from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, who grew up loving cinema, Anurag arrived in Mumbai in the early 1990s with dreams of making films — but his journey was anything but smooth. Many of the projects he wrote in his early years never materialised — some were shelved, while others were left incomplete after the director passed away. His first major breakthrough came in 1998 when he met Ram Gopal Varma, who was impressed by one of his earlier scripts titled Auto Narayan. Varma roped him in to co-write his now-iconic crime drama Satya (1998) along with actor-writer Saurabh Shukla. Around the same time, Anurag was also working closely with filmmaker Shivam Nair. It was during this period that Anurag came across case files on the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders that took place in Pune in 1976. The story inspired him to write and direct his debut film, Paanch. However, the film …
