2 killed, 16 injured in APSRTC bus-lorry crash in Andhra Pradesh

Two persons — a child and a student — were killed, and 16 others injured after an APSRTC Ultra Deluxe bus collided with a lorry at Pullampeta in Kadapa district on Monday, a police official said. The accident occurred between 1 am and 1.15 am near Udumuvaripalli village when the bus, travelling from Tirupati to Kadapa, collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction.  Around six seats on the right side of the bus were damaged in the impact, resulting in casualties and injuries, police said. “Two persons lost their lives while 16 others sustained injuries after an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Ultra Deluxe bus was involved in a collision with a loaded lorry in Kadapa district,” the official told PTI, adding that the lorry driver was also injured and shifted to hospital. According to police, about 27 passengers were travelling in the bus at the time of the accident.  The injured were shifted to Rajampet Government Hospital and other medical facilities for treatment. Ramprasad Reddy on Saturday said that there were no plans to privatise the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). In a statement, the Minister said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had held a high-level review meeting and announced a series of initiatives aimed at modernising the public sector transport. Highlighting the successful completion of one year of the Stree Shakti scheme, the Minister said it was not a financial burden on the APSRTC, rather a social responsibility. He said as part of broader modernisation efforts, APSRTC depots would be upgraded through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and the government had pledged continued support to the APSRTC employees. The Minister claimed that the coalition government had successfully revived the APSRTC after a period of decline in the previous five years. “The government now is steering the APSRTC towards a new phase of growth and transformation,” he said. …

The incident has turned out to be a matter of concern considering the half a dozen such instances witnessed in Andhra Pradesh over the last fortnight. The APSRTC rural service (Palle Velugu) bus was proceeding from Kadiri in Sri Sathya Sai district to Vempalle in Kadapa district when the accident happened at Veerannagattupalle. After seeing smoke rising from the roof of the bus, the 22 passengers raised an alarm and brought the bus to a halt before rushing out to safety. RAO The Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation Transport (APSRTC) has incurred a revenue loss of more than ₹30 crore in the last 10 days on account of the devastating floods, said Minister for Transport M. Ramparasad Reddy. Speaking to the media after visiting the waterlogged Vidyadharapuram bus depot, he said he would approach Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for funds to help revive the facilities belonging to the public sector carrier at the earliest. The Vidyadharapuram bus depot is spread across 20 acres and comprises APSRTC facilities like the Transport Academy, Zonal Office and the Tire Division besides its Central Hospital and other wings. He said he would seek aid from the State government under the Central Disaster Relief funds. The Minister said due to disruption of bus services on account of the floods, passengers moving in different directions had faced problems, as APSRTC was forced to withdraw services due to reasons varying from bad …

RAO The distress caused to the residents of low-lying areas in the city and the surrounding regions on account of torrential rains, spilled over to the premises of the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) on Tuesday (September 3, 2024). The bus station was packed with commuters eager to reach safer destinations. As rains rendered many roads unusable, the APSRTC had to withdraw services on many routes in the last couple of days. Though there was improvement in the situation on Tuesday, the public sector giant could not operate its entire fleet of buses for reasons varying from breached roads and inability of the drivers to report to duty due to their areas getting inundated by flood waters. Many bus depots in the low-lying areas were still under a sheet of water like the ones at Vidyadharapuram and Ibrahimpatnam. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is running special buses to cater to voters heading home to exercise their franchise on May 13 (Monday), the polling day. In a statement released on May 11 (Saturday), the APSRTC vice-chairman Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that in addition to the 339 daily services from Hyderabad to various places in Andhra Pradesh, the RTC operated 302 additional buses on May 11 and will operate 206 special buses on May 12. On May 11, the Corporation operated 38 special buses to Ongole, 20 to Eluru, 23 to Machilipatnam, 45 additional buses to Vijayawada, 18 to Guntur, 26 to Narasaraopet, 17 to Nellore, 19 to Nandyal and four special buses to Visakhapatnam, all from Hyderabad. All platforms at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) were chock-a-block with commuters’ rush. Y. Srinivas Rao, an RTC Traffic Inspector, and Sambasiva Rao, an outsourcing staff, suffered injuries in the attack. Police, who rushed to the bus station, picked up a few vagabonds and beggars who allegedly thrashed the RTC employees, and shifted them to Krishnalanka police station.
