A friend in need: Behind Elavenil Valarivan and Arjun Babuta’s team rifle gold at Asian Shooting Championships, a familial bond | Sport-others News

5 min readUpdated: Feb 8, 2026 08:14 PM IST There was a moment at the Paris Olympics when Arjun Babuta was one trigger-finger away from winning a precious Olympic medal. But his nerve deserted him in that moment of need. His friend Elavenil Valarivan, though, didn’t. Elavenil, who had faced her own disappointment at the Olympics, saw Babuta break down in front of media at the Chateauroux shooting range and quickly whisked him away from the stage where the shooter could privately grieve the moment. “When somebody is down, you can see that is not the right moment. I think a friend is what they needed,” said Elavenil after her second gold medal at the Asian Shooting Championships at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Sunday. She had won the individual 10m air rifle women’s event earlier and added the 10m air rifle mixed team title with Babuta. It was in 2017 that both Babuta and Elavenil started shooting together in the same ranks as juniors. Almost ten years and two Olympic Games have …

Shooting: How Charlie Mackesy’s book helped Arjun Babuta overcome Paris Olympics heartbreak and win silver at World Cup | Sport-others News

Months after he finished up fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle final in Paris Olympics, Arjun Babuta would receive the author Charlie Mackesy’s picture book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse from his coach Deepali Deshpande. The picture-book, which was later made into an 2023 Oscar winning animated short film, revolved around the idea of love, hope, friendship and the courage of asking for help with the storyline involving a boy getting lost in winter wilderness and crossing paths with a mole, a fox and a horse and eventually choosing to stay with his new friends. As Babuta clinced Silver, his first international medal, just 0.1 points behind eventual gold medal winner Sheng Lihao — who won gold at Paris Games — in the men’s 10m air rifle final in ISSF World Cup in Peru, Deshpande’s mind was taken to the book she gifted to Babuta. “It was a different Arjun post the fourth place finish in Paris. Rudrankksh Patil has score for 11th shot deleted, withdraws mid-way during 10m rifle final

There was some drama at the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Lima, Peru as the former 10m air rifle world champion Rudrankksh Patil withdrew from the final mid-way, which saw him end in 8th spot in the men’s 10m air rifle event where compatriot Arjun Babuta ended second behind China’s Sheng Lihao by the narrowest 0.1 margin. Rudrankksh was dejected that the score from his 11th shot in the final was disallowed by the jury. Patil had shot a 10.4 with his 11th shot which saw him go into fourth spot. But right after all the eights shooters had taken their 11th shot, the jury huddled at their table and had a prolonged discussion, which held up the 10m air rifle final. Eventually they came to the conclusion that Rudrankksh had shot before the chief range officer had given the command to do so. He was consequently docked the shot, and got no score for the 11th pull of the trigger. This meant, from 4th position, he slumped to last place in the 8-man final …
