Central government employees are likely to receive a salary increase in April 2026, as an announcement regarding the January 2026 Dearness Allowance (DA) hike is expected next month. If this happens, both employees and pensioners will see an increase in their April 2026 payments. According to official estimates, the move will benefit approximately 50 lakh serving central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners nationwide. (Bloomberg) According to a report by Live Hindustan, the DA hike is revised twice a year. The first revision usually takes place in March, around Holi, and is effective from January 1. The second revision happens in October/November and is effective from July 1. However, this year, no announcement regarding a DA hike was made during Holi. It is therefore quite possible that the hike may be announced in April, the report said. How much will the hike be? Currently, the DA for central government employees stands at 58%. According to the aforementioned report, there could be an increase of 2–3%, which would take the DA to 60% or 61%. This …

File. | Photo Credit: ANI Chief Justice of India-designate Justice Surya Kant on Saturday (November 22, 2025) said one of the biggest challenges in his tenure as top judge would be to bring 90,000 pending cases in the Supreme Court down to a “manageable” number. Even as he spoke at 7, Krishna Menon Marg to mediapersons, the number in the National Judicial Data Grid climbed to 90,225.  Justice Kant said he did not want to engage in a blame-game on who was responsible for the staggering number of arrears in the top court — the highest in the court’s history. “I will not pick fault on who is responsible. Mounting govt arrears trigger cash crunch for contractors

MUMBAI: Welfare sops and pre-poll freebies have squeezed the state’s finances, stalling payments to private contractors executing government schemes. Their pending dues are now ₹77,770 crore. Mounting govt arrears trigger cash crunch for contractors Sameer Shaikh from Ahilyanagar was awarded a ₹20-lakh contract to build a gram panchayat office but, for six months, he’s been struggling to get the project off the ground as he’s unable to raise fresh capital. Shaikh is still owed ₹86.50 lakh for earlier projects under various government departments. Shaikh is one of thousands of small and medium contractors whose outstanding payments with the government are holding them back from working on future contracts. While the bill in outstanding dues was a colossal ₹89,000 crore until March, it has fallen marginally, to ₹77,770 crore, as the government released ₹11,400 crore with local body elections around the corner. For most contractors, it’s made no difference. For most of them, 80% of their bills are yet to be cleared but the government simply cannot afford to pay them right now. The problem was …

OROP: Supreme Court grants Centre time till March 15 to pay arrears

The Supreme Court on Monday gave the Centre time till March 15 to comply with its judgment last year, upholding One Rank-One Pension (OROP) scheme for the Armed Forces after the government informed that it has already tabulated the pension for 25 lakh ex-service personnel. A Bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud adjourned the hearing even as Attorney General R. Venkaramani appeared for the Centre while senior advocate Huzefa Ahmedi and advocate Balaji Srinivasan represented the petitioner, Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement. The Court had found no constitutional infirmity in the OROP principle as defined in the government’s communication of November 7, 2015. The OROP scheme stipulated that benefits would be effective for pensioners from the cut-off date of July 1, 2014. Pensions of past pensioners would be re-fixed on the basis of pensions of retirees in the calendar year 2013. The scheme had finally mandated the re-fixation of pension every five years. The judgment dealt with the petition complaining that pensioners of the same rank, who were, according to them, a “homogenous class”, were arbitrarily …
