India through art of a remarkable early Victorian woman, now on display in Delhi | Delhi News

4 min readNew DelhiJul 15, 2026 03:43 AM IST Almost 200 years ago, an aristocratic English lady of remarkable talents travelled across North India, recording her experiences in words and in art. Emily Eden, a correspondent of Queen Victoria and the sister of a Governor-General of India, sketched Indian princes, soldiers, and servants. Her artworks featured a number of Indian cities – among them Calcutta, Lahore, Punjab, Simla, and Kabul. But she ignored Delhi – for she found “nothing to see” in the city that had then recently passed under the rule of the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar. The art of Emily Eden is now back in the city that she barely found worth sketching. An exhibition titled Princes & People of India: Portraits by Emily Eden, featuring almost 30 hand-coloured lithographs and the Eden Family Archives, both now part of the DAG collection, is ongoing at DAG on Janpath until August 1. The Raja of Putteealla, on his state elephant. Eden travelled from Calcutta, the capital of British India until 1911, to …

The celebrations for director Honey Trehan and actor Diljit Dosanjh were short-lived. Their long-delayed film Satluj (previously titled Punjab 95) finally premiered on ZEE5, only to be taken down within 48 hours following directives from the Government of India. While the film was removed from the platform, pirated copies soon surfaced online, with many viewers calling it one of the year’s finest films. The film’s removal has prompted several voices from across the film industry and beyond to speak out in its support. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma hailed Satluj as “cinema used as confrontation.” Sharing his thoughts on X, he wrote, “Just saw SATLUJ and it is not a film, but a deep wound that will never heal. It stirs up the sludge in one of the darkest chapters of our history. This is cinema used as confrontation, where @diljitdosanjh acts with a quiet fury with no chest thumping heroism. His only weapons are a ledger and a conscience. @rampalarjun adds layers of moral rot in the institutional complicity that feels chillingly realistic.” Praising Honey …

The couple, however, have consistently silenced the noise by embracing and respecting each other’s faiths. Their wedding video was widely appreciated, and a heartfelt note by a close friend later revealed how Hindu and Islamic traditions beautifully came together during the ceremony—the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra blending seamlessly with the sound of the Azaan from a nearby mosque. Now, the couple have found a way to preserve that cherished memory forever. Sonakshi recently revealed that she and Zaheer received a special painting from a friend in Los Angeles, depicting the Gayatri Mantra and the Kalma together in a single frame. Sharing photos of the artwork on Instagram, the actress penned an emotional note. It read, “When we got married, while the Pandit was chanting the Gayatri Mantra, the sound of the Azaan floated up into our home, and the …
