More medals and a big rise around the World

The Indian para sports ecosystem has been growing exponentially over the years, having multiple world championship titles and Paralympic medals across various sports. Historically, India has won 60 medals at the Paralympic Games, but 48 of those were won in just the last two editions, showcasing the country’s rise in this sport. At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, India accounted for almost half (29) of its all-time Paralympic medals, securing a historic first top-20 finish on the medal table. This rise in Indian para sports is not a one-off. The country has regularly been on an upward trend and has shown consistency across tournaments. Historic Asian Para Games India had a phenomenal outing at the 2023 Asian Para Games, surpassing three digits in medal count for the first time with a historic tally of 111 medals, finishing fifth overall. Aruna Tanwar bows out after heavy defeat in Taekwondo

Indian para taekwondo player Aruna Tanwar ended her Paralympics 2024 campaign with a first-round defeat in the women’s K 44-47kg category on Thursday. Aruna was facing Nurcihan Ekinci of Turkey in a round of 16 contest. Aruna was no match for her opponent from Turkey who garnered points at will in the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points from a body kick nine times during the contest while the Indian conceded one penalty point (gam-jeom). Aruna failed to advance to repechage as Nurcihan Ekinci lost her quarterfinal contest later. The K44 category includes athletes with impairments in one arm above the elbow. Para taekwondo was introduced during Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. Athletes will compete in  five separate weight categories for each gender. In Para taekwondo, matches are held in a one-round contest, lasting up to five minutes. The main difference from able-bodied Taekwondo is that kicks to the head and punches are not allowed because not all athletes can block similarly. Taekwondo player Aruna Tanwar qualifies for Paris Paralympics

Taekwondo player Aruna Tanwar qualified for the 2024 Paris Paralympics on Sunday after she secured a medal in the U-47kg category of Para Taekwondo at the Asian Paralympics Qualifier held in Taian, China. This will be her successive Paralympics. In 2021, Aruna, who has deformities in both hands, became the first-ever Indian Taekwondo athlete to qualify for the Paralympics when she received a wild card entry. “We are beyond thrilled to announce that NCOE Lucknow’s very own Taekwondo superstar Aruna Tanwar has officially qualified for the Paris Paralympics 2024!” Sports Authority of India (SAI) Lucknow centre posted on X. India has so far secured 36 quota places for Paris Paralympics across seven sports. Aruna, who hails from Haryana’s Bhiwani district, is the only Indian taekwondo player to win a berth for the Games. At the Asian Paralympics Qualifier, India has sent a three-member contingent.
