Asansol violence: Mob ‘pelts stones’, ‘vandalises’ police outpost over curbs on mosque loudspeakers | Kolkata News

3 min readKolkataMay 16, 2026 08:12 PM IST Violence broke out in West Bengal’s Asansol on Friday night after a mob allegedly pelted stones and vandalised a police post following complaints against the volume of loudspeakers at a mosque. At least seven people have been arrested in the incident, the police said Saturday. Police sources claimed a police team urged the locals and mosque authorities to reduce the loudspeaker’s volume in Asansol’s Jahangir Mohalla, following a complaint. This angered the locals who protested outside the police outpost at around 9 pm. Soon, a scuffle broke out in front of the police outpost, and the mob allegedly pelted stones and vandalised the police outpost. Police claimed that several police and civilian vehicles were also damaged in the incident. A huge police contingent later arrived at the spot, and the police lathicharged the protesters to pacify the situation and disperse the mob. On a day when the highest temperature rose to 43 degree Celsius in Kolkata, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said some districts in West Bengal may see light rainfall from Sunday. Meanwhile, the highest maximum temperature in West Bengal on Tuesday was recorded in Kalaikunda after the mercury touched 45.4 °C. On Tuesday, Panagarh recorded a highest temperature of 44.8 degree Celsius, Bankura saw the mercury touching 44.2 degree Celsius. In Sriniketan, Canning, Krishnanagar, Jhargram, Purulia and Asansol, the maximum temperature hovered around 42-43 degree Celsius. Burdwan, Jhargram, Behrampur and Kalyani recorded 42 degree Celsius. On Tuesday, the sky remained clear in the daytime and became partly cloudy towards the evening with no sight of rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in the city, which is expected to prevail till Thursday. Meanwhile, eight districts across the state will continue to be under red alert for severe heat wave conditions and warm night conditions till Thursday. New Delhi: Amid a massive backlash over the BJP fielding him from Asansol Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh has said he would not be contesting the election. “I thank the BJP leadership for trusting me and announcing my name as the candidate from Asansol, but I won’t be able to contest the election for some reason,” he said in a tweet in Hindi this afternoon. The choice of 38-year-old Singh, a resident of Bihar, for the Bengal seat had sparked a huge row. Many had also pointed to his discography, which has several songs with objectionable references to Bengali women.
