Forget ‘next Sindhu or Saina’, focus on a pack of 6-7 players – Pullela Gopichand’s mantra to seize Badminton glory | Badminton News

Pullela Gopichand isn’t burdening himself with the pressure to unearth the ‘next Sindhu or Saina’. He developed two Olympic medallists from scratch, starting 20 years ago. He watched them deliver on most part of their potential, fritter some away, but elevate Indian badminton to another plane nevertheless, and has moved on to the next task at hand. He believes no coach can get stuck in trying to churn out remakes of past greats – Saina’s natural strength, Sindhu’s easy reach and power, can’t be cloned. But not having a rangy or untiring talent rise on the horizon, is no excuse to keep waiting endlessly for a precocious, physically built specimen to show up and play messiah to Indian women’s singles. “It doesn’t work that way,” he realistically says. With one firm eye on global developments, and another warily scanning the Indian scene, Gopichand declares, “Our best chance is not one brilliant player. It is packing the Top 30 with 6-7 good players, and attacking every tournament like a pack, and targeting titles.” Having minutely observed …

Ashmita Chaliha’s rise from a sheltered introverted life to ambitious competitor | Badminton News

Geetali Chaliha’s minor quibble whenever her talented badminton-playing daughter, Ashmita, returns from one of her international tournaments is that she is handed over a bunch of fridge magnets. And the only effort into picking souvenirs by Ashmita are reserved for the family’s doted doggie, Eddy, who gets the most exquisite Hamleys toys. In her relaxed, comfortable, spacious abode in Guwahati, Ashmita grew up a quiet child, with her twin loves of badminton and the dogs. Till two years ago, she had been content to train diligently, if only a little too comfortably, at Guwahati, where in her introverted life, she played racing video games for recreation, and happily dug into her favourite prawns and lobster or mango rice and chicken rolls, with food delivery apps on fingertips. Family vacations and Durga Puja celebrations at the ancestral home in Sukhsagar in West Bengal completed an idyllic and fairly cushy life. Ashmita’s badminton talent is ridiculously promising. So there was always a question on whether her love of the sport could push her out of this comfort …

PV Sindhu stuns top-seed Han Yue to enter the semis

Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu stunned top-seed and world number six Han Yue of China in the quarter-final of the Malaysia Masters 2024 to enter the semi-finals on Friday. PV Sindhu won the match 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 in 55 minutes to book her berth in the next round. World Number 15 PV Sindhu slumped mid-game but eventually recovered from it to get the better of her Chinese opponent. Sindhu avenged her loss at the Badminton Asia Championships last month. Sindhu will either face Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani or Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the last four stages. Sindhu started well in the first game and raced to a lead of 11-5 at the first mid-game break. The Chinese fought back making it 13-16 but Sindhu took five consecutive points to win the first game. In the second game, Han came with all her guns blazing and started with a 5-0 lead. Sindhu struggled more in the second game as Han took a big lead of 15-2. Despite some fightback later, Han easily pocketed the second game …

Ashmita Chaliha 2.0: Shorter swing, more patience among key changes as she beats world No 10 for her biggest win yet | Badminton News

Nozomi Okuhara, Michelle Li and now Beiwen Zhang. They might all not be in their prime, but outlasting their gritty, pickled in experience games takes serious belief, and 24-year-old Ashmita Chaliha seems to have overcome her mental blocks to start pebbling back these wins to bring back home every tournament now. On Thursday at the Malaysia Masters, the Assamese notched her biggest scalp as she beat World No 10 Beiwen Zhang, 21-19, 16-12, 21-12 in 43 minutes to enter the Super 500 quarterfinals. Chaliha had come to prominence at the 2019 Guwahati Nationals where her attacking southpaw play had impressed the Danish legend Morten Frost who was in attendance. Invited to train at the Padukone Academy in Bangalore, Chaliha couldn’t stay consistent, and her career dawdled for a fair few seasons. She was error-prone and looked casual on the court, when opponents retrieved her endlessly. On the brink of being given up on, Chaliha has resurrected hopes with technical changes. Her list of scalps is impressive because she has turned 180 from being recklessly attacking …
