Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday informed the Rajya Sabha that work on the automatic train protection system, which should have been done during the 1980s or 1990s, is being carried out now at a fast pace and is giving good results. Replying to supplementaries during the question hour, the minister said what the entire world has installed long back, India is doing it now as previous governments did not carry out the same earlier. “This is a very complex system. It has to be designed for each and every section of the train. Our team is working day and night to make sure that this thing, which should have been installed in the 1990s or in the 1980s, is being done from 2014 onwards. “Something which the rest of the world has done way back, that work has now been taken up by PM Narendra Modi. Vande Bharat Sleeper train latest update: Indian Railways (IR) is set to transform long-distance travel experience for passengers with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Designed for overnight journeys, the new variant of Vande Bharat Express aims to offer enhanced comfort, speed and a premium travel experience. 99.98 pc uptime for IRCTC website during April-October 2025: Ashwini Vaishnaw

The IRCTC website recorded 99.98 per cent uptime between April and October 2025, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The uptime was 99.86&#37 in 2024-25. Indian Railways has undertaken both administrative and technological measures for system modernization. Administrative measures include deactivation of suspicious user IDs, lodging complaints on National Cyber Crime Portal for suspiciously booked PNRs, revalidation of user IDs etc, an official release said. System Improvement Measures include checks and validations, engagement of leading content delivering network and anti BOT application with cutting edge technology to ensure smooth booking by genuine users. In addition, regular third party Audits of IRCTC`s technology infrastructure are being conducted for improvement in the system, it said. Responding to a written question, the minister said the Indian Railways has strengthened and simplified its passenger grievance redressal mechanism in recent years with the introduction of the RailMadad Portal. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed on Friday that the Union Cabinet has sanctioned ₹1,73,000 crore worth of railway projects connected with Maharashtra until now. To expand Kavach’s implementation, Indian Railways is conducting trials with additional Original Equipment Manufacturers to increase capacity. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday (April 11) said that Indian Railways will start a major initiative in the name of ‘Kavach 5.0’. It will work for metro and suburban trains and will be ready by December 2025. Kavach 5.0 is the next-generation version of the ‘Kavach’ technology, due to which the capacity in suburban areas will increase by almost 1.5 times. All major cities including Mumbai will benefit from this initiative.  “The installation of Kavach Version-4 is underway across the country to enhance train services. Additionally, the development of Mumbai-specific Kavach Version-5 will be completed by December. This will enable a 30 per cent increase in train frequency,” said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. India is all set to launch its first indigenous semiconductor chip soon, as five semiconductor units are currently under construction in the country, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. The Minister highlighted that India`s electronics manufacturing sector, once negligible, has now become one of the top three export sectors. Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “We have five semiconductor units under construction and will soon see our first Indian chip rollout, with telecom manufacturing significantly growing”. A dedicated quota of six to seven lower berths per coach in Sleeper Class, four to five lower berths per coach in AC 3 Tier (3AC) and three to four lower berths per coach in AC 2 Tier (2AC) provision has been made, informed Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday (March 19, 2025).
