Punjab to host Asian Champions Trophy, announces CM Bhagwant Mann

The Punjab chief minister Bhagwat Mann, on Tuesday, said that the state is all set to host the 2026 Asian Champions Trophy in October. “It will be for the first time that Punjab will be hosting an international hockey event. The matches will be played in Mohali and Jalandhar,” said Mann, as per The Tribune. The state will also host a four nations tournament annually, claimed the Chief Minister. While neither Hockey India or Asian Hockey Federation have announced anything regarding the same, as per reports the Asian Champions Trophy will commence either on 26 or 27 October later this year. If Punjab hosts the continental tournament, it will be the second edition of the Asian Champions Trophy to be held in India in three years. The country had hosted the 2023 edition in Chennai. Jugraj Singh scores twice as Hardik Singh-led Punjab reclaim National crown

Jugraj Singh scores twice as Hardik Singh-led Punjab reclaim National crown

Jugraj Singh has developed a liking for scoring in finals. At the men’s Asian Champions Trophy final last year, when the match was in a deadlock for India against China, he stepped upfield and scored a rare field goal. In the Hockey India League this year, he smashed three goals for a hat-trick in the final as his side, Bengal Tigers, lifted the title. And on Tuesday in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh Jugraj scored twice as powerhouses Punjab reclaimed the country’s top honours in domestic hockey as they came from a goal down to beat Madhya Pradesh 4-1 in the final of the 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2025. After missing out last year when Odisha clinched their first title, Punjab were back on the top of the podium for their third title in the last five editions. Punjab were the red-hot favourites on paper, purely based on the star-power in their squad, studded with Olympic medallists. Led by two-time bronze medallist Hardik Singh, Punjab started the match cautiously, but still created #Hockey 🏑 …

Asian Champions Trophy hockey: Navneet, Lalremsiami on target as India overcome Japan goalkeeper’s heroics to reach final | Hockey News

Asian Champions Trophy hockey: Navneet, Lalremsiami on target as India overcome Japan goalkeeper’s heroics to reach final | Hockey News

When asked on the day before the semifinals why India have been better in the second halves of matches at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, head coach Harendra Singh was guarded in his response. “Sometimes Plan B becomes Plan A, and it’s been working for us. The opponents also have been doing their homework,” he said. He then elaborated, with a chuckle: “Har match mein hum opponents ke goalkeeper ko hero bana rahe hain.” Harendra was being tongue-in-cheek as he thought India’s finishing could be better than shooting at the goalkeepers hurriedly. But sure enough, a day later, Japan’s goalkeeper Yu Kudo emerged as the (nearly) hero in the semifinal in Rajgir. Navneet Kaur (48′) and Lalremsiami (56′) were on target as India set up a title showdown against China on Wednesday. Kudo was playing like a character in a Japanese anime, who seemed to possess the superpower to read where Indian forwards were targeting. She saved with her pads closed, she saved with her stick stretched upwards, and she saved with her outstretched …

Asian Champions Trophy: Navneet Kaur steps up to break deadlock, Deepika continues to shine as India beat Japan | Hockey News

When the Indian women’s hockey team registered good results in tournaments over the last few years, Navneet Kaur invariably would be the heartbeat of the team’s attacking plays. As the Rani Rampal era slowly wound down after the Tokyo Olympics, Navneet – who also hails from Shahbad’s famous hockey nursery like the former captain – emerged as one of India’s most valuable attacking outlets. Now the vice-captain and one of the senior members of the Indian women’s hockey team in a new Olympic cycle, Navneet has to shoulder much more of the attacking burden on the pitch. On Sunday in Rajgir at the Asian Champions Trophy, she stepped up to do just that in the third quarter when India were being thwarted by a resolute Japanese defence. With the match tied at 0-0, Navneet produced a fabulous finish for the breakthrough goal, before Deepika added two more in the fourth quarter. India’s 3-0 win ensured that the hosts and defending champions finished first in the pool stage and will face Japan again in the semifinals …

Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: Deepika hits five as India beat Thailand 13-0 | Hockey News

Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: Deepika hits five as India beat Thailand 13-0 | Hockey News

This was always going to be the match where the floodgates opened for India as the Salima Tete-led side was playing Thailand, the lowest-ranked team at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir. India had never lost to Thailand and the latter had already been handed a 15-0 thrashing by a second-string Chinese side earlier this week. Hence, there were few surprises as Deepika led the way with five goals, while three players scored twice each as India produced a relentless performance to win 13-0 on Thursday. With the obvious caveat that India had their easiest match on paper, it was still an attacking display that pleased head coach Harendra Singh. He has been stressing on a few aspects over the past couple of weeks – first touch inside the circle, creating 1v1 situations across the field, and penalty corner conversion – and they clicked into place. Asian Champions Trophy hockey: India overcome 15 sloppy minutes, Deepika scores late winner vs Korea | Hockey News

Asian Champions Trophy hockey: India overcome 15 sloppy minutes, Deepika scores late winner vs Korea | Hockey News

In sports, 24 hours can be a long time. On Monday, India played arguably their best 15 minutes of hockey immediately after the half-time break against Malaysia. On Tuesday, however, India played sloppy hockey in Q3 after a controlled first half, and allowed South Korea to equalise from 0-2 down, before getting a late winner. “Gifted them goals,” as head coach Harendra Singh put it. Eventually, however, India managed to sneak past the finish line by the barest of margins to make it two wins out of two at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar. It was 57 minutes on the clock when Deepika scored her second goal of the night and India’s third via a penalty stroke. But with just a couple of seconds left, Korea nearly got a draw, missing a far-post finish by a whisker. On the balance of play, perhaps India did just enough to deserve a win. Sangita Kumari (3’) continued from where she left off in the last edition of the tournament at her home ground in …

Hockey, Asian Champions Trophy: Sangita Kumari shines as India find their groove in second half for 4-0 win against Malaysia | Hockey News

In a battle between the second-highest-ranked team of the tournament and the second-lowest, the result was hardly in any doubt. But Salima Tete-led India took their time in their opener at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar before eventually prevail 4-0 over Malaysia, thanks to a solid second-half showing. Coming into the tournament, head coach Harendra Singh had stressed on the need to improve the fitness and endurance levels of the team while also being smarter in front of goal. But the first half was frustrating for the hosts in that regard, just managing one goal that came courtesy Sangita Kumari in the 8th minute. However, when the match ended, the young forward from Simdega had scored another, and there were reasons to smile. Two goals in two minutes at the end of the third quarter for Preeti Dubey and Udita ensured there wasn’t an upset on the cards. And Sangita applied the finishing touch in the 55th minute. While Harendra has made it clear he wants his team to be set up with …
