Deepak Punia, Sujeet not allowed to compete at Asian Olympic Qualifiers

Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia (86kg) and Sujeet Kalkal’s search for 2024 Paris Olympics quota places met with a big blow as the duo were not allowed to compete at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers on Friday in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Sujeet (65kg) and Deepak, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, were stranded at the Dubai International Airport since Tuesday after the desert city was flooded due to torrential rain. According to the UAE government, the country recorded 259.5 mm of rainfall, the highest in 75 years. Due to the rain and subsequent flood, 300 flights have been cancelled from Dubai. Deepak and Sujeet reached Bishkek this morning around 8 AM local time. However, the organisers did not allow them to participate in the competitions despite the wrestlers meeting the criteria of matching the requisite body weights. WFI pulls back circular, Ad-Hoc committee to conduct wrestling trials

Following a petition at the Delhi Court, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to withdraw its circular on conducting the selection trials for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 and the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Wrestling Tournament. Taking note of the statement made by WFI’s counsel, Justice Sachin Datta said the trials shall proceed as per the circular issued by the ad-hoc committee supervising the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India. The ad-hoc committee of the WFI issued a press release on February 9 saying it will hold the trials for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers (April 19-21) and World Olympic Qualifiers (May 9-12) on March 10 and 11 at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala and Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex in Sonipat.
