‘Pakistan asked for ceasefire, we kept them waiting’: Ex-defence chief Anil Chauhan recalls Operation Sindoor

Pakistan had requested a ceasefire on the morning of May 10 last year during Operation Sindoor, but India deliberately delayed its response as it had “not even executed half” of their planned strikes, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has said. Former Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said Pakistan’s decision to seek a ceasefire stemmed from a belief that its strikes on Indian targets had achieved their intended effect. (PTI File) Speaking at ThePrint’s Off The Cuff event, Gen Chauhan said Pakistan contacted India through the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) hotline that morning. New Delhi, however, deliberately kept Islamabad waiting till the afternoon. “The biggest surprise to me was on 10 May, when Pakistan picked up the phone and said they wanted to talk. This was because, on 9 May, the kind of rhetoric emerging from their side was that they would sort India out in 48 hours. Within about eight hours, they picked up the phone. ‘Lot of people asked what’s happening? Is it (career) done? But I kept believing’

It wasn’t a comeback that many backed PV Sindhu in. But defying all doom-declarations, the 31-year-old former World champion and twice Olympic medallist, has gone on to win a top tier Super 750 title at Japan Open. After she had ensured that Akane Yamaguchi’s shuttle had indeed dropped out on the last point for a symmetric 21-17, 21-17 win, Sindhu was on her knees, face in hands, letting tears flow. It was a release from many pronouncements – whispered and whinnied on social media, announcing she should be done with it. “I had tears in my eyes because it was important for me to win,” Sindhu told BWF. “I was really really focusing hard and working hard on myself. I kept believing i can do it. Lot of people were like what’s happening? Is it done? Or whatever it is. Still I believed in myself and my family and my coaches,” Sindhu said. Thanking her set of coaches – Irwansyah chiefly, and trainers and physios, she thanked her circle that had stood by her decision …

In an interview with NDTV, Venkata Narayana revealed that one of the key modifications involved a dialogue that drew a connection between Dr BR Ambedkar’s Constitution and the constitution of Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The original dialogue, he explained, essentially stated that if Ambedkar’s Constitution is not followed, then TVK’s constitution would apply. K Venkata Narayana framed the dialogue as something far simpler than how it was interpreted. “If you don’t follow the constitution, what will be the consequence. In a more relatable way, it has been put across. It’s common language. Even at home, you will tell the child, if you don’t follow the rule that has been made, next follows the consequence,” he said, adding, “Since there …
