At least four persons were injured during a confrontation with Assam Rifles personnel at New Heaven village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday over a protest against establishment of an Assam Rifles’ outpost, police said. The villagers alleged that 40 Assam Rifles personnel posted at Lambui village. The villagers alleged that 40 Assam Rifles personnel posted at Lambui village, attempted to establish an outpost at New Heaven without prior consultation with the village authority. Demanding a halt to the outpost’s construction, local people, including women and student bodies, demonstrated a protest at the village. Officers further said the situation turned tense when security forces attempted to disperse the protestors, allegedly firing several live rounds and resorting to a lathi charge. Imphal/New Delhi: A two-year-old girl from a poorly connected remote village in Manipur’s Kamjong district was rescued and airlifted by the Assam Rifles on Monday, a statement said. The little girl, Miss Chuishut, a resident of Grihang village, which is located in one of the most inaccessible parts of Manipur, accidentally fell into a water tank at 5.40 am on Monday. Given the remoteness of the village with no proper roads leading to it, the residents had little hope for timely medical support, it said. The situation changed when the Assam Rifles on getting a distress call rushed soldiers and medical personnel to the village immediately, the statement said. They managed to reach the village just in time and stabilised the child with first aid. Next, the soldiers called in a military helicopter for evacuation to the Assam Rifles Military Hospital in the state capital Imphal, the statement said. In a series of successful joint operations, Indian Army including Assam Rifles in coordination with Manipur Police and other security forces, recovered 35 weapons, ammunition and warlike stores from both hill and valley regions in the districts of Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, Churchandpur, Imphal West, Noney, Jidribam and Kakching in Manipur.                            Acting on specific intelligence, the Indian Army, in coordination with Assam Rifles and Manipur Police launched a joint operation in Lungkhongjang ridge North of Bungte Chiru village in Bishnupur district and recovered one modified sniper rifle, five 9 mm pistols, two single barrel rifles, grenades, ammunition and war like stores. (Representational) An over-three-decade-old issue is set to be resolved with the Assam Rifles and the Mizoram government arriving at an agreement for the paramilitary force to move out of its battalion headquarters in the heart of the state capital, Aizawl, to an area 15 km from the city.  In 1988, 12 civilians had been killed by personnel from the Assam Rifles and the state government, led by then chief minister Laldenga, had demanded that the force shift out of the capital.  On Saturday, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the Assam Rifles will start moving out of the Aizawl headquarters in April to a base in Zokhawsang, about 15 km from the city. Assam Rifles said they did not stop the vehicle of Mizoram Power Minister F Rodingliana Aizawl: The Assam Rifles today said their posts across Mizoram faced an electricity outage for several hours on Thursday after soldiers allegedly stopped the convoy of Mizoram Power Minister F Rodingliana. Mr Rodingliana on Friday alleged his convoy was stopped by Assam Rifles soldiers on the outskirts of Aizawl while he was returning home from Champhai. This led to a confrontation between officials accompanying and the paramilitary troops. An official statement said the power outage across Assam Rifles’ posts and locations in Mizoram, following the incident, jeopardises operational readiness and poses a security risk in border (Myanmar) areas. “The power outage (on Thursday) affecting Assam Rifles posts across Mizoram appears to be a deliberate move aimed at obstructing their operations,” the statement said.
