Brahim Diaz’s assist against Brazil was redemption, one daring pass at a time

5 min readJun 14, 2026 09:14 AM IST By Shuvaditya Bose Between receiving Noussair Mazraoui’s pass and laying the ball for Ismael Saibari, Brahim Diaz had little more than two seconds. It was still enough for a precise three-part act. First came the cushioned touch with his right foot. Then two sharp adjustments with his left, taken before Lucas Paqueta and Douglas Santos could close him down. Finally, the pass, threaded between Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos, with just enough pace to send Saibari through on Alisson Becker’s goal. The pass sent Saibari through and Morocco had their goal in the 21st minute. Six months earlier, he had been afforded far more time to make an even bigger impact. Too much time, perhaps. From when he was brought down inside the box at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal to eventually taking the resultant penalty kick, Diaz had fifteen minutes. In those fifteen minutes, he saw the opposition coach, Pape Thiaw, taking his players off the field in a symbolic gesture of protest, …

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike bagged a double to secure a 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday while talisman Mohamed Salah, whose future at the Merseyside team is uncertain, recorded a landmark assist on an emotional afternoon. Arne Slot’s men climbed provisionally to sixth in the table on 26 points after 16 matches, seven behind leaders Arsenal, while Brighton are now three points off Liverpool in ninth. “For the first time in weeks, I feel like we had a bit of luck today,” Slot told the BBC. “Maybe we deserved this bit of luck, because of the mentality that we showed and the injuries and other things like that.” Close-season signing Ekitike fired the hosts into a first-minute lead 47 seconds in — the quickest goal in the league this season — after Yankuba Minteh’s dreadful attempted clearance. Joe Gomez headed the ball back in and it dropped perfectly for Ekitike, whose shot on the turn beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. After streak of 1,297 NBA games spanning 18 seasons, LeBron James scores in single digits, but gives game-winning assist

When LeBron James scored eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA clash with the Toronto Raptors, a long streak ended for the basketball legend. For the first time after 1,297 successive regular season games (not including playoffs), LeBron had scored less than double digit figures. But LeBron left the arena happy after assisting Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer which turned out to be the game-winning shot in the Lakers’ 123-120 win rather than shoot himself to try and get to the double-figure mark. The streak started on January 6, 2007. It was the longest such streak in NBA history by a country mile: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run at 575. According to data pulled out by AP Sports, during his streak, there were 1,266 times when the NBA future hall of famer had reached the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth quarter. When journalists asked LeBron for his thoughts on the streak ending, he replied: “None. We won.” …
