NCP-SCP leader Sharad Pawar and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale were among 19 new Rajya Sabha members who took oath here on Monday. The oath was taken in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan. Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present during the ceremony in the Rajya Sabha chamber, reported PTI. Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale on Thursday said he did not believe there was a conspiracy behind the Baramati plane crash that claimed the life of then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, but insisted that the Central Bureau of Investigation should probe the incident, news agency PTI reported. “We demand that the inquiry into the plane crash should take place through the Central Bureau of Investigation. Union minister Ramdas Athawale on Thursday said that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) should be merged with India, and warned that if it fails to happen, the country will have to fight more wars, reported the PTI. Responding to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi`s remarks on the reservation for the Maratha community, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale clarified that the community gets a 10 per cent reservation under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale opposes Maharashtra’s `love jihad` law

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Sunday opposed the Maharashtra government`s move to draft a law to stop “love jihad”. “Love jihad” is a term used by right-wing outfits to allege conspiracy by Muslim men to convert Hindu women through marriage. The Maharashtra government has issued a Government Resolution (GR) stating that a committee headed by the director general of police (DGP) will suggest steps to tackle complaints of “love jihad” and forced conversions. It will also look at legal aspects and the laws framed in other states and recommend legislation to prevent such instances. “It is wrong to call interfaith unions as love jihad. There should be a provision to prevent conversions. Steps should be taken to prevent disruption of social and religious harmony,” the Union Minister for social justice and empowerment told reporters. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi considers everyone as equal and has initiated welfare measures for all.
