The Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested that assets of acid attack perpetrators be attached as a means for providing compensation to victims of such crimes, observing that “extraordinary punitive” measures alone can ensure such actions are a “painful” experience for the accused as well. The top court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by a victim who narrated the plight of victims. A day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached director Shankar’s three immovable assets worth ₹10 crore to a plagiarism case involving his 2010 film Enthiran, he responded. The director of the Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai-starrer released a statement claiming that the ED has not communicated with him regarding the case, which he claims was already dismissed by the Chennai High Court. The case pertains to the 340 MW Seli Hydropower Electric Project on the Chenab river in Lahaul and Spiti district. The state government awarded the project to Seli Hydro Electric Power Company Limited/Moser Baer and issued the Letter of Allotment (LOA) on February 28, 2009, following which the firm deposited the upfront premium of ₹64 crore. However, the project did not materialise. The state government cancelled the LOA and ordered forfeiture of the upfront premium.
