Two days after a woman tourist was allegedly molested and her family members were attacked by a group of hooligans at Bhavali Dam in Maharashtra’s Igatpuri, the police on Tuesday said that it has arrested nine persons in connection with the matter. Three people, including a woman’s husband and mother-in-law, have been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to murder her by throwing her off a second-floor balcony following a dispute over dowry demands in southeast Delhi, police said on Tuesday. The convicts were identified as Amir Khan, his mother Nasrin and his brother Sonu alias Firoz. The case pertains to an incident reported in the Kalindi Kunj area in February 2022. According to police, the woman had alleged that she was subjected to continuous cruelty and harassment over dowry demands by her husband and his family members. Around 300 people were booked by the Kerala Police following an alleged attack on officials of the ED and security personnel in Thiruvananthapuram after a raid linked to former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, officials said on Wednesday. Among the most serious charges is attempt to murder under Section 109 of the BNS, which carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison, or life imprisonment if severe injuries are caused. A year-wise comparison indicates an alarming spike of nearly 135 per cent between 2021 and 2022, followed by a 11.8 per cent rise from 2022 to 2023, before climbing sharply again in 2024. In broad daylight, a man opened fire at two persons following a financial dispute, at the Inamdar Wasti in Koregaon Mul village in Pune district, on Saturday. Sharad Kailas Gote (36) lodged the first information report (FIR) in this case at the Uruli Kanchan police station of Pune rural police. Pune police arrested the assailant identified as Dashrath Shitole, a resident of Inamdar Wasti. Police said Kaluram Mahadev Gote of Biwari village in Haveli taluka was injured in the incident. A police probe revealed Kaluram and Sharad went to Dashrath Shitole’s house on Saturday regarding a financial deal. There was a dispute as the duo demanded money from Shitole. But he allegedly got angry and opened fire at Kaluram and Sharad from his pistol. Police said Sharad escaped unhurt, but Kaluram suffered a bullet injury and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
