Samir Soni: You have to adapt to what audiences want

“The attention span of the audience has decreased tremendously over the years,” says Samir Soni, who returned to screen after nearly two years with his new show on the vertical storytelling format. “We moved from feature films to television, then to web series, and now to vertical storytelling. The shift isn’t sudden but a natural progression, seeing the content consumption,” he adds. Samir Soni Soni notes that changing attention spans have consistently driven the evolution of formats which have opened new doors and opportunities. “People spend more time on their phones than anywhere else. This is simply evolution – you can’t resist it. As an actor we have to keep growing, getting stuck to one medium has never helped anyone.” Soni, who has been part of shows like Made in Heaven, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, Cartel, and others, mentions that his goal as an actor is to perform, not to focus on the medium. “I’m an actor. I enjoy acting and portraying interesting characters. The platform has never been an issue for me,” says Samir, …

How many films did you watch this year? If you are a regular person who just enjoys going to the theatre, you might have had a handful of outings this year. The number would be much higher if going to the cinema is something you do a couple of times a month, but if you describe yourself as someone who loves the movies, you wouldn’t have the number on your fingertips. So then how can one explain that people who make the movies, claim to love them, and constantly complain about how streaming is killing the economics of their business, are not going to the cinemas? This debate began after a roundtable conversation on The Hollywood Reporter India where Sabar Bonda director Rohan Kanawade said that the last film that he enjoyed at the theatres was the Hollywood film Sinners, which released in April. Saiyaara director Mohit Suri was obviously shocked hearing this, so he asked Rohan if that was the last film he watched. Rohan explained that he “didn’t get time to watch many …

The Bads of Bollywood is Aryan Khan’s debut series. We wanted viewers to care about people, not plot twists.” Motwane acknowledged that OTT’s early years offered unparalleled freedom. “We pushed boundaries because we were denied that space in cinema for so long. Now there’s a risk of pulling back just when things were …

He has also never shied away from speaking his mind, especially when it comes to cinema, whether he’s praising or criticising films. Now, the legendary filmmaker has stepped forward, slamming Indian filmmakers for not pushing creative boundaries and producing intellectually inferior films under the assumption that our audiences are “dumb”. He cited this as a reason why Indian cinema struggles to create films on par with international blockbusters like director Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025). On Saturday, RGV had shared his excitement on social media after watching the latest Tom Cruise film, calling it the “best” instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
