2 min readNew DelhiJul 8, 2026 04:45 AM IST While self-regulation lies at the heart of the independence of the legal profession, it is also important to maintain public confidence in the institution of lawyers, the Supreme Court said Tuesday. The top court also asked the Bar Council of India (BCI) to undertake a “comprehensive performance audit of the disciplinary mechanisms administered by it and the State Bar Councils under the Advocates Act, 1961”. A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe also called for setting up a National Legal Academy (NLA) that will provide continued legal education to lawyers so as to enable post-enrolment structural learning, enhance professional competence and other skills. The bench set aside an Allahabad HC order which refused to give a lawyer any relief in a matter in which his name was removed from a panel of advocates by the Canara Bank and included in a “Caution List” titled “Third Party Entities Involved in Fraud”, maintained by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). This happened after a legal opinion …

PWD gives nod for a consultant for structural audit of Signature Bridge in Delhi | Delhi News

To ensure the structural stability of the Signature Bridge, the Public Works Department (PWD) has approved a proposal to engage a consultant to conduct a comprehensive structural audit and preparation of maintenance methodology of the city’s first asymmetrical bridge, inaugurated in 2018. PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said, “Public safety is our highest priority. It is surprising that no structural audit of the Signature Bridge was conducted in the last seven years. This landmark structure suffered from years of neglect under the previous government. To ensure its long-term safety and stability, we have decided to appoint an expert consultant for a comprehensive structural assessment.” The consultant will also examine the slanting lifts and assess the feasibility of making them operational for public use. Based on the report, necessary steps will be taken for repairs, rehabilitation and maintenance, Singh told The Indian Express. The Signature Bridge project was executed by the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC). Audit of fundamental rights’ effectiveness could yield ‘uncomfortable’ findings: J. Chelameswar

Audit of fundamental rights’ effectiveness could yield ‘uncomfortable’ findings: J. Chelameswar

Former Supreme Court judge J. Chelameswar on Saturday (May 30, 2026) expressed doubts over how effectively the Constitution’s fundamental rights protect common people. He said an audit on the matter could yield “very uncomfortable” findings. He made the critical remarks while inaugurating a two-day national conference at the Government Law College, Ernakulam, on ‘Shaping the Future of Legal Education: Innovation, Practice and Reforms’. “The Constitution textually guarantees fundamental rights. However, if a proper audit is conducted on how the guarantees work to protect the common man in practice, the report would be very uncomfortable. I do not have any statistics. I am speaking from my life experiences,” Mr. Chelameswar said. “All that it requires to deprive the liberty of an individual is that somebody in the government must believe that the activity of the person is detrimental to the sovereignty of the country,” he added. He stressed that in which direction the constitutional system is progressing is a matter for each one in the judicial fraternity to examine. He said it was important to understand …

The Union education ministry is planning to expand its scrutiny of the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) on-screen marking system to include a full audit of the platform’s implementation — from the tendering process through to actual execution — amid concerns over glitches and evaluation-related issues, people familiar with the matter said on Friday. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, during a meeting with CBSE officials, in New Delhi on Thursday. (ANI Video Grab) The move follows anger among parents and teachers, and a series of HT reports covering what appears to be a rushed process to roll out an entirely new mechanism for scoring nearly 10 million answer scripts despite concerns from those who tested the system. “The ministry’s immediate focus is to stabilise the re-evaluation portal with the help of the IIT teams so students can apply for scanned copies, raise objections and seek verification smoothly,” this person added, asking not to be named. “After completion of the re-evaluation process, the IIT team will also audit the OSM website and examine the system …

‘Yadav bharti’ to ‘reservation audit’: Amid UP job vacancies row, SP flips narrative on BJP | Political Pulse News

As hundreds of aspirants from Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Scheduled Caste (SC) communities crawled on their bellies in the scorching heat outside Uttar Pradesh Education Minister Sandeep Singh’s residence in Lucknow on Monday, the Samajwadi Party (SP) moved swiftly to fold the protest into its broader political pitch through the “PDA Arakshan Audit” ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The visuals from the protest over the stalled 69,000 assistant teachers’ recruitment process have provided fresh ammunition to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s ongoing “PDA Aarakshan Audit” campaign. Through the initiative, the party is attempting to reclaim the social justice narrative and consolidate non-Yadav OBCs, Most Backward Classes (MBCs), Dalits and minorities under its PDA — Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak — umbrella. For years, the BJP accused the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP government of promoting “Yadav bharti” — favouring members of the Yadav community in government recruitment and postings between 2012 and 2017. The narrative is widely seen to have helped the BJP consolidate non-Yadav OBCs and MBCs, while also expanding its support among non-Jatav Dalits. In a …
