Lando Norris led McLaren from pole position and finished ahead of arch-rival and defending world champion Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen to win the inaugural race — Australian Grand Prix — of the Formula One Championship 2025 at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne on Sunday. In a rain-affected race where McLaren started with 1-2 after Norris and Oscar Piastri finished in the top two in qualifying, Verstappen finished second while Mercedes’ George Russell was third. McLaren’s Lando Norris kept his cool on a sweltering afternoon at Albert Park to take pole position at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Saturday as his teammate Oscar Piastri joined him on the front row. Defending champion Max Verstappen will start his Red Bull car third on the grid ahead of fourth-placed Mercedes driver George Russell but it was a disappointing session for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc to start seventh and Lewis Hamilton eighth. Briton Norris lapped the lakeside circuit in one minute, 15.096 seconds, 0.084 ahead of Melbourne native Piastri, who will hope to become Australia’s first home winner since the race joined F1’s global calendar in 1985. Formula 1 and the FIA released the calendar of the next Formula One World Championship season earlier on Thursday, and the schedule has seen a few changes. The Australian Grand Prix takes back the season opener, and will mark the start of the 75th season of the sport. The changes were made keeping in mind a smooth geographical flow of the season. With Ramadan coming in March next year, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix have been moved to April, as opposed to March last season. These will return to being Sunday night races next season after being held on Saturday in the previous edition. The Chinese Grand Prix is scheduled to be held before the Japanese Grand Prix making it the second race of the season. The 2025 F1 season will start two weeks later than usual, giving teams more time to make changes to their machinery ahead of the pre-season testing which will be taking place from February 26 to February 28 in Bahrain.
