(Photo: X/@DrSJaishankar/PTI) India’s external Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, however, skirted a direct answer in his separate session at the conference the same day, amid a political row over it in New Delhi. Jaishankar maintained that India is “wedded to strategic autonomy”, at a time when the Congress-led Opposition has accused Narendra Modi’s government of “selling out under pressure”. Finer details of the India-US trade deal are being worked out, after Trump announced the framework towards a deal on February 2, which was confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Court’s duty to uphold dignity and autonomy of women: Madras HC

Emphasising the judiciary’s duty to safeguard the “dignity, autonomy, and peace of women”, the Madras high court has dismissed a maintenance plea that attempted to “re-entangle” the mother of a 15-year-old boy in fresh litigation more than a decade after her divorce. Justice Gowri said courts must remain vigilant to the vulnerabilities women face, noting that even after lawfully ending a marriage and rebuilding their lives with dignity, women are too often pulled back into hostility in various guises. (ANI) Justice L Victoria Gowri of the Madurai bench of the Madras high court made the remarks on November 13 while dismissing a petition filed in the name of the minor by his paternal grandfather, seeking monthly maintenance from the boy’s biological mother. The court noted that the minor had been reduced to a “mere pawn” in what was essentially an attempt by his grandfather, and by extension, the estranged husband, to reopen “long-closed wounds”. Justice Gowri said courts must remain vigilant to the vulnerabilities women face, noting that even after lawfully ending a marriage and …

Last Updated:November 11, 2025, 06:24 IST The SC concluded that courts ‘must remain vigilant against fishing inquiries masquerading as legitimate requests for scientific evidence’ The ruling came while setting aside an order passed by the Madras High Court, which had directed a doctor to submit blood samples for DNA profiling in connection with a criminal case alleging cheating and harassment. (Representational image/News18) The Supreme Court of India delivered a significant ruling on Monday, holding that courts cannot direct DNA testing as a routine measure in legal proceedings. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Vipul M Pancholi stressed that such orders constitute a grave intrusion into the bodily autonomy, privacy, and dignity of individuals and carry the risk of causing irreversible harm to the sanctity of family relationships and the legitimacy of children. The ruling underscores that compelling a person to undergo DNA profiling is a serious invasion of personal liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution and must only be ordered when it is “eminently necessary” for securing justice. The SC highlighted the …

Sixteen years after Kannada was granted the Classical Language status in 2008, CESCK still does not have its own building and is dependent on CIIL for all its expenses, creating hurdles for its development. In addition, the lack of funds from the Union government has hampered its activities. In this backdrop, a delegation led by Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman Purushothama Bilimale met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently and urged him to not only separate the centre from CIIL, but also give it autonomy and hand it over to the State government, on the lines of a similar centre in Tamil Nadu.   While the Minister reportedly agreed to take the centre out of CIIL, make it autonomous, he turned down the request to hand it over to …
