Manika Batra left out of India’s Asian Games Table Tennis main squad, Ayhika Mukherjee misses out

India’s most decorated women’s table tennis player, Manika Batra, has been left out of the main squad for the 2026 Asian Games after failing to satisfy the selection criteria laid down by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). The 30-year-old, who won a historic mixed doubles bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games and has multiple Commonwealth Games medals to her name, was named among the reserve players for the continental event scheduled in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. According to TTFI, selections were made based on a policy introduced in 2023, which allocates 50 per cent weightage to national rankings, 40 per cent to world rankings and the remaining 10 per cent to the discretion of the selection committee. Despite being India’s second-highest ranked women’s player at World No. 51, behind Sreeja Akula at No. 45, Manika’s absence from domestic tournaments meant she did not feature prominently in the national rankings, affecting her overall selection score. Why Ayhika Mukherjee-Sutirtha Mukherjee partnership is good enough for bronze but needs fitness upgrades for gold | Sport-others News

The pair of Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee continued to create history, securing a bronze medal after losing their semifinal match at the Asian TT Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on Sunday. The duo had no answer to Japan’s Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara and lost in straight games 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-9). Their opponents though, weren’t any pushovers. Harimoto was part of Japan’s Paris 2024 Olympics silver-medal team and Kihara is a three-time World Championships medal winner. Ayhika-Sutirtha were confident going into the match having beaten the pair of Harimoto and Kihara in the final of WTT Tunis Contender last year but the Japanese duo have just upped their respective games in the past year and looked confident throughout. The losing semi-finalists are awarded bronze medals at these Championships and they became the first Indian women’s doubles pair to win a medal here. Ayhika and Sutirtha have repeatedly raised the bar when it comes to Indian women’s doubles. They made history at the Asian Games last year by winning a bronze, India’s first medal. Then …

Ayhika Mukherjee, the giant-slayer who doesn’t take prisoners

Ayhika Mukherjee, the giant-slayer who doesn’t take prisoners

The stage was set. The pressure was on. Ayhika Mukherjee had the ball in hand. It was the quarterfinals of the 2024 Asian Table Tennis Championship. India were facing South Korea and the fixture on a knife edge at 2-2 after four matches. And as is the case with most tightly contested fixtures, the fifth match, between Ayhika Mukherjee and Jeon Ji-hee went down to the wire. With Ayhika leading 11-10, a point would put India into the semi-finals, and a first-ever medal at the event would be theirs. A simple backhand chop serve was what Ayhika dished out. Her opponent, Jeon Ji-hee, tried a backhand loop and the ball went beyond the table, sending the Indians into a frenzy. The medal was secured. Ayhika, had claimed yet another scalp from the top-tier in world table tennis, with her latest victim being Jeon Ji-hee, ranked 17th in the world. Interestingly, Ji-hee wasn’t the first higher ranked player that fell to Ayhika on the day. Earlier, in the opening match of the quarterfinals fixture, the Indian …

How Ayhika Mukherjee’s anti-spin rubber and well-disguised deception puzzled the Koreans | Sport-others News

From the high of beating World No. 1 Sun Yingsha in February to the low of being dropped from the Indian team for the Paris Olympics in July, India’s Ayhika Mukherjee has had a topsy-turvy year. Yet, it’s her unyielding will that has made her one of the most feared players in the world of table tennis. At the Asian TT Championships on Tuesday, she proved yet again, that despite her lowly ranking of World No 92, she can never be counted out. As it turns out, she revels in playing against the best. Against World No. 8 Shin Yubin in the opening tie of the quarterfinal against Korea, Ayhika knew that if India had to do the unthinkable and pull off an upset, she needed to win. It was a nervy day for India too. Their match was supposed to be at 5 pm (local time) and it was only at 9 am that they received an email informing them that their match was brought forward to 12 noon. They scrambled and got ready …

The Asian Table Tennis Championships being held in Astana, Kazakhstan were seen as a bold expedition for Indian women, when they embarked on the trip. And as has been the recent trend, the Indians continued punching well above their weight. At the Paris Olympics in July, the team had made inroads, and finally at the Asian Championships, there was a medal to boast. With their 3-2 quarterfinal win over second seeds and Olympic bronze medallists Korea, India confirmed a medal at the tournament, regarded at par with the Olympics as it has all the powerhouses of table tennis. Seeded sixth, they were underdogs against World No. 3 Korea which had the likes of 20-year-old World No. 8 Shin Yubin and World No. 16 Jeon Hijee. But the Koreans didn’t know what struck them. Ayhika Mukherjee was the star winning the opener and decider, and Manika Batra pulled her weight putting India 2-0 ahead, both beating higher ranked opponents. The Koreans are right up there, among the best in the world. First up was Ayhika against …
