2 min readNew DelhiJun 4, 2026 12:42 AM IST PANCHAYATS FROM the five southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Tamil Nadu bagged 18 of 42 National Panchayat Awards 2025, while those from the Hindi heartland states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar could manage to win just one each. The awards, conferred by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj annually, recognise outstanding local rural bodies across the country for their contribution towards the Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) and excellence in grassroots governance. The performance of the local bodies is assessed through the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI), which evaluates panchayats across governance, infrastructure, livelihoods, social justice, environment, and women empowerment indicators. This year, 42 panchayats from 17 states and union territories were selected for the two categories of awards – Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) and Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP). The RCB batter Tim David has been suspended from the opening game of the IPL 2027 after being handed a one-match ban following the ice bag incident during the 2026 finals against the Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium. It is understood that David has breached the Code of Conduct during RCB’s title run in the 2026 season. According to Article 2.9, throwing a ball (any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match.” The incident occurred during the 10th over of the Gujarat Titans’ innings, following the fall of a wicket, when he threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon. Tim David admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Javagal Srinath. The UT education department has constituted a five member committee to monitor compliance with the School Bag Policy, 2020, across all government, government-aided and recognised private schools, with officials warning of action against violations. The policy caps school bag weight at 10% of a student’s body weight, mandates bagless days to encourage activity based learning, and restricts homework for Classes 1 and 2. (HT Photo) The panel will conduct quarterly inspections to ensure that school bags do not exceed 10% of a student’s body weight and that mandated measures such as bagless days are being followed. It will also carry out surprise checks, gather feedback from parents and students, and compile school-wise compliance data. Monthly consolidated reports are to be submitted by the 5th of each month. Deputy DEO II Renu Sharma has been appointed convener of the committee, which includes four principals and headmasters from city schools.
