Olympic medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia, suspended for four years on Tuesday due to his refusal to provide samples for a dope test, said his ban will be quashed if he joins the ruling BJP. The National Anti-Doping Agency had first suspended Bajrang on April 23 for his refusal to give samples for the dope test in March. Following NADA’s suspension, the sport’s world governing body UWW also slapped him with a suspension. However, NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) revoked his ban in May. NADA served a fresh notice to Bajrang NADA for a dope test and accused him of refusing the test. Bajrang, however, challenged the charge on July 11 in a written submission following which hearings were held on September 20 and October 4. The National Anti-Doping Agency on Tuesday suspended Bajrang Punia for four years for his refusal to provide his sample for dope test on March 10 during selection trials for the national team. NADA had first suspended the Tokyo Games bronze medallist wrestler on April 23 for the offence following which, the World Governing body UWW had also suspended him. Bajrang had appealed against the provisional suspension and NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping panel (ADDP) had revoked it on May 31 till NADA issues the notice of charge. NADA, then on June 23 served the notice to the wrestler. Bajrang, who joined Congress along with fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat and was given charge of All India Kisan Congress, had challenged the charge on July 11 in a written submission following which hearings were held on September 20 and October 4. “The Panel holds that the Athlete is liable for sanctions under Article 10.3.1 and liable for ineligibility for a period of 4 years,” the ADDP said in its order. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Tuesday suspended Bajrang Punia, a bronze medallist at the Tokyo Games, for four years for violating the anti-doping code. The NADA suspended Punia for refusing to give a sample for a dope test during selection trials in March. The suspension begins on April 23, 2024. NADA had initially suspended Bajrang on April 23 for the offence, which was also supported by the World Governing body UWW. The World body had also suspended the grappler.
