Unknown gunmen kill LeT commander, ISI-linked official in Pakistan

The hit jobs by unidentified gunmen continue to rock both the ISI and the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Pakistan. Unknown persons have killed a senior LeT commander as well as a low-level official linked to the ISI.  Those killed have been identified as Mir Shukr Khan Raisani and Mohammad Iqbal. The LeT has lost several top commanders in recent months thanks to hit jobs by the unidentified gunmen. Raisani was a top LeT commander and was killed at Quetta in Balochistan. Just a day before his killing, he had attended a major event organised by the LeT. He was handling operations for the LeT in Balochistan. Before this, he was involved in recruitment and training targeting Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. However, the killing that the Indian agencies are tracking closely is that of Mohammad Iqbal. He was killed by unknown gunmen in Orakzai district, which is a mountainous region in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Iqbal’s death has opened up a can of worms, as he was directly involved with the Islamic State in KP and Afghanistan. …

(AFP) Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest and poorest province, was brought to a virtual standstill last Saturday when the separatist Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched a coordinated sunrise attack. Its fighters entered schools, banks, markets and security installations across the region in one of their largest ever operations. Images from the provincial capital Quetta and other areas showed blown-out buildings, some razed to the ground, and blackened bricks and concrete strewn across the streets. “The situation is now under control as there is no fighting in the city but people are very scared and concerned about their safety,” Quetta resident Nasrullah Khan, 51, said. Its record of suppression, brutality and violation of human rights is well known,” the statement added.   Pakistan continuing its campaign of ‘state sponsored terror’ in Balochistan: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. File | Photo Credit: PTI The people of Balochistan are facing a “ruthless campaign” of “state-sponsored terrorism” from the Pakistani authorities, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said on Friday. In a detailed statement posted on ‘X’, Mr. Sarma recollected the suppression of the Baloch nationalist movement and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi “gave voice” to the people of Balochistan by extending support to the Baloch liberation movement in 2016. “Systematic extrajudicial killings in Balochistan — commonly known as ‘kill and dump’ — remain one of the darkest chapters in Pakistan’s human rights record. For years, the Baloch people have endured a ruthless campaign of enforced disappearances, where students, activists, teachers, and intellectuals were abducted by state agencies, subjected to torture, and later found dead in remote ravines or discarded along desolate roads,” said Chief Minister Sarma. The Assam Chief Minister’s remarks on Balochistan are the latest addition to official-level verbal exchanges between India and Pakistan since the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that India blamed on Pakistan-based …

Pak Army Chief On Kashmir, Balochistan

Pak Army Chief On Kashmir, Balochistan

New Delhi: In remarks that are sure to draw a strong response from New Delhi, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has said Kashmir is Islamabad’s “jugular vein” and will be so and that Pakistan “won’t forget it”. He has also defended the two-nation theory that was the basis for the Partition in 1947. Addressing a gathering of Pakistanis based abroad, General Munir said they were the country’s ambassadors and must not forget that they belong to a “superior ideology and culture”. “You should definitely tell Pakistan’s story to your children. Our forefathers thought that we are different from the Hindus in every aspect of life. Our religions, our customs, traditions, thoughts and ambitions are different. That was the foundation of the two-nation theory that was laid.” The two-nation theory was the basis for the movement demanding a separate state for Muslims in the years before Independence. The movement was led, among others, by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who became the first Governor General of Pakistan. The two-nation theory runs contrary to the idea of a …

How China Is Exploiting ‘Failed’ Projects In India’s Neighbourhood

How China Is Exploiting ‘Failed’ Projects In India’s Neighbourhood

It is a known fact that in the last few years, China has made major inroads in the South Asian region, especially through infrastructure and connectivity projects. This has intensified under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which was started in 2013. The grand projects have helped China gain major strategic footholds in the region. Here are some key ports and airports in India’s neighbourhood that provide China with a strong vantage position in the region—both through land and ocean—and challenge New Delhi’s security position. Two Dead Projects In Sri Lanka The Sri Lankan government had looked to Beijing for a loan to build its ambitious Hambantota port. China spent around $1.3 billion in total towards this. The China Export Import Bank extended the first half of the loan ($306 million) at the rate of 6.3%, while the second half ($757 million) was at 2%. The construction of the port began in 2007, and the first phase was completed in 2010. However, in 2012, only about 34 ships docked at Hambantota. As the port was …
