SC seeks cost details on NAT testing in blood banks to prevent transfusion

The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought more details such as costs and availability of the facility to conduct Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAT) in government hospitals across the country to detect Transfusion Transmissible Infections like HIV and hepatitis. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi asked lawyer A Velan, appearing for PIL petitioner `Sarvesham Mangalam Foundation`, to provide details as to how much cost will be incurred in conducting NAT tests and whether the facility was available in government hospitals so that poor can also avail it. The foundation made the union ministry of Health and Family Welfare and all the states and UTs (union territories) as parties to the plea. The PIL sought an order to the Centre and the states to declare that the “Right to Safe Blood” is an intrinsic facet of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution. Bank employee unions have called a nationwide strike for January 27 to press a long-pending demand for a five-day workweek. Chandrababu Naidu, who chaired the 233rd and 234th State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) meetings at the Secretariat on Friday, emphasised on accelerated credit support for agriculture, MSMEs, and renewable energy sectors. Mr. Naidu stressed that no citizen should be forced to rely on private moneylenders, urging banks to ensure easy access to institutional finance. Special focus was placed on equitable development, with loans to SC, ST, and BC communities highlighted as essential. Border 2 advances have been live for three days now, and they are looking for momentum. At the time of writing, the film has sold around 60K tickets at the two national chains (PVR INOX and Cinepolis). Overall, Border 2 has banked in around Rs. 5 crore nett for the first day, with solid contribution from non-national chains. The sales are fairly well spread over the extended weekend through Monday, with around 150K tickets at the national chains and Rs. 10 crore nett overall. Region-wise, pre-sales are strongest in Rajasthan and the Delhi–UP, followed by East Punjab.
