‘Between me and students’: CJI Surya Kant slams Bar Council move against protesters

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday came down heavily on the Bar Council of India (BCI) over its intervention in the NALSAR University of Law enrolment controversy, saying the Council had “no business” interfering with students’ right to protest and making it clear that the court would not allow students to be stopped from raising their voice through lawful and peaceful protests. He restrained the BCI and all state bar councils from pursuing any punitive or criminal action against students and faculty of any national law university or university in connection with the row. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said, “It’s a dialogue between the students and me.” (PTI) The CJI’s observations came hours after BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra announced that the Council had decided to close its proceedings against the 2026 graduating batch of NALSAR, Hyderabad, after initially freezing their enrolment and then withdrawing the freeze while retaining an inquiry into those allegedly instrumental in the students’ campaign against CJI Kant being invited as chief guest at their convocation. …

BCI halts enrolment of NALSAR 2026 graduates amid row over CJI Surya Kant in convocation, withdraws move later

In a dramatic turn of events, the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Thursday evening withdrew its order freezing the enrolment of the entire 2026 graduating batch of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, just hours after directing all state bar councils not to enrol any student from the batch pending an inquiry into a campaign opposing Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s participation in the university’s convocation. The Bar Council of India (BCI) had directed all State Bar Councils not to enrol any 2026 law graduate of NALSAR University of Law before withdrawing the move later. (PTI) In a communication issued late on Thursday evening, BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said the Council had “thoroughly discussed and deliberated” on his earlier letter and modified the direction imposing the enrolment ban. The Council, he said, was of the unanimous view that, according to the “latest report”, the vast majority of NALSAR’s 2026 graduating students were innocent and had not intended to participate in any move to show disrespect. BCI urges Supreme Court to approve merit-based co-option system

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has approached the Supreme Court seeking approval for a merit-based co-option mechanism to ensure 30 per cent representation of women in state bar councils, news agency PTI reported. The apex bar body has proposed filling the 10 per cent co-option quota by selecting women candidates who secured the highest number of votes among those not elected, rather than through subjective appointments. The proposal aims to supplement the 20 per cent seats reserved for women through direct election, thereby fulfilling the total 30 per cent mandate laid down earlier by the Supreme Court. BCI Chairperson and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, in a statement, said the bar body has considered the submissions made by stakeholders before the apex court-appointed High Powered Election Supervisory Committee on the co-option of women members in state bar councils. “This issue concerns not merely filling seats, but the larger institutional objective, which is ensuring that women advocates, who constitute an indispensable and distinguished part of the legal fraternity, are given their rightful place in the …

Supreme Court expresses reluctance to intervene in 5-year law course debate| India News

The Supreme Court on Monday expressed reluctance to intervene in the debate over the duration of the five-year integrated LLB course, saying such policy matters cannot be decided by courts, even as it underscored the importance of strengthening the quality of legal education. The court said that decisions regarding the duration or structure of legal education programmes fall within the domain of regulatory and academic bodies. (HT PHOTO) Hearing a plea seeking the reduction of the course duration to four years, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that while legal education is a critical issue, decisions on the structure and length of professional programmes require wider consultation among academic institutions, regulators, and other stakeholders. “Legal education should be taught to children so that they know what are the basic laws… Teaching legal education is one issue, and the quality of education is another. There has to be quality education.” The observations came as the court heard a public interest litigation filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, which seeks …
