An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee was killed, and her friend was seriously injured after a car rammed into their two-wheeler under the Koyambedu flyover in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai in the early hours of Saturday, police said. Police said they have formed a special team to track down the absconding culprits. 2 min readSuratMay 23, 2026 05:33 AM IST A SURAT lawyer on Friday submitted an application to the Bar Council of India, the Bar Council of Gujarat and the Surat District Bar Association against stand-up comedian Badal Sharma over the latter’s “derogatory” remarks on lawyers during one of his shows. In his application, Surat-based Kamlesh Raval sought to raise an objection to “hurtful, defamatory and derogatory comments against lawyers/legal profession”. Badal Sharma was unavailable for comment on the matter. Raval alleged that Badal Sharma, during his live performance in a show, subjected lawyers to “insulting generalisations”. Raval’s application adds that “comedy and artistic expression undoubtedly enjoy freedom in a democratic nation; however, such freedom also carries responsibility. Public remarks that demean an entire profession can create social prejudice, erode public trust, and cause emotional harm to members of the legal fraternity.” It seeks strict action against the stand-up comedian, and that he (Sharma) should apologise and ensure that he does not repeat such statements in future. Country bombs hurled at private liquor bar in Watrap

At least three persons are suspected to have hurled two country made bombs at a private liquor bar near Watrap in Koomapatti police station limits on Monday. Police said that the trio came to the private club and consumed liquor at noon. While they left, it is alleged that they hurled the bombs and escaped. A worker identified as Mayan, 34, was injured. Based on the owner’s complaint, the police registered a case. The CCTV cameras were being examined. Senior officers visited the spot and further investigation is on. Chandigarh: Rohit Sud elected HC Bar body president

Advocate Rohit Sud was elected the president of the Punjab and Haryana high court Bar association on Friday night. He defeated his rival Parminder Singh Sekhon by 96 votes. Sud served as the Bar secretary in 2019-20 and as an executive member in 2008-09. (HT Photo) Nearly 4,250 advocates cast their votes between 9.30am and 4pm, while counting began later in the evening. A third-generation lawyer, 43-year-old Sud is the nephew of retired justice NK Sood and hails from Jalandhar, where his father works as a chartered accountant. His grandfather, DD Sud, was also a lawyer. Sud served as the Bar secretary in 2019-20 and as an executive member in 2008-09. Among the other office-bearers, Ashish Bishnoi was elected vice-president after defeating Sunil Agnihotri by 510 votes. Parampreet Singh Bajwa won the secretary’s post by a margin of 922 votes over Namit Khurana. For the post of joint secretary, Kirandeep Kaur defeated Nidhi by 539 votes, while Ashish Rana became treasurer after polling 112 votes more than Satnam Singh. RECIPE FOR AAM-AZING GIMLET Ingredients 30 ml raw mango and ginger oleo saccharum15 ml fresh lime juice 60 ml gin (Hapusa Gin) Salted raw mango ribbon, to garnish For the saccharum:200 g grated raw mango200 grams castor sugar15 grams diced ginger  Method To make the raw mango and ginger oleo saccharum: take a ziplock or a vacuum seal bag, add the raw mango, castor sugar and diced ginger. Vacuum seal the bag and let it sit at room temperature for about 36 hours, the sugar will extract the flavour of the raw mango and ginger to create a saccharum.Strain out the mix, bottle.Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice, shake.Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass, garnish with the raw mango ribbon on a skewer. After Andhra HC row, SC directs high courts to set up Bar-Bench grievance panels

The Supreme Court on Monday urged high courts across the country to consider constituting grievance redressal committees at the high court, district and taluka levels to amicably resolve tensions between the Bar and the Bench, days after a controversial courtroom exchange in the Andhra Pradesh high court involving a young lawyer triggered widespread outrage in legal circles. The Supreme Court said institutional mechanisms were necessary to ensure that issues arising between judges and lawyers are addressed in a timely and cordial manner. (ANI) A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi passed the direction while closing suo motu proceedings initiated on the basis of representations made by the Bar Council of India and the Supreme Court Bar Association over the incident involving justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
