BJP sweeps Upper Assam; Congress wins few seats in Lower Assam, Barak Valley

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday secured a historic win in Assam after winning in 82 of the 90 seats it contested in. The BJP managed to secure some wins in Lower Assam and Barak Valley as well. (@himantabiswa) The ruling BJP swept almost all of the seats in Upper Assam where the party secured wins in 33 of the 35 seats with just one each being bagged by Congress and its ally Raijor Dal. The same trend continued in central Assam and the three hill districts where BJP along with its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) bagged almost all seats ceding just three seats, two to All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and one by Raijor Dal. New Delhi, Amid demands for reserving seats in the newly inaugurated Barak Hostel, Jawaharlal Nehru University has clarified that no hostel is reserved based on region or culture but priority is being given to students from the northeast in line with official directives. JNU says no hostel reserved based on region, assures priority to northeast students in Barak Hostel The university said the hostel allotment process began on April 8 in a phased manner and “priority have been given to the northeast students in Barak Hostel.” It, however, emphasized the existing policy would continue to be followed for all accommodations, including Barak Hostel. “This is brought to the kind notice and information to all the concerned stakeholders… The Barak hostel was opened officially for allotment of JNU students on April 7,” the university said in a circular, referring to the Inter-University agreement and the government-funded Barak Hostel project. “Presently, all northeastern students are residing at all JNU hostels. Fire breaks out on Barak Brahmaputra Express at Bihara station | Video A fire broke out on the Barak-Brahmaputra Express at Bihara station, Silchar Town in the Cachar district of Assam on early Sunday. A video emerged on social media showed a wave of smoke erupting from the Barak-Brahmaputra Express at Bihara Railway Station, leading to a delay in the train. Following the chaos due to the fire incident, the Northeast Frontier Railway clarified that the incident was caused by some break-binding issue.  The Barak-Brahmaputra Express was going from Shillong to Tinusukia when smoke, coming out from the wheels of the train, was spotted in Cachar.  There was smoke due to brake binding in the wheel of one of the sleeper coaches of train 15641, said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Northeast Frontier Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO).
