High drama prevailed outside the District Collectorate in Rajasthan’s Barmer on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) when Sheo MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati allegedly poured petrol on himself during a protest over the demand for employment at a mining project. Mr. Bhati’s supporters and the police personnel restrained him and prevented any mishap. Mr. Bhati was taken inside the Collectorate for talks with the senior officers to resolve the issue, while the premises were placed under heavy police deployment. The local youth, labourers and villagers had reached the Collector’s office as part of an ongoing agitation in the Rajasthan State Mines and Mineral Limited (RSMML) lignite mines in Giral area. The local workers at the mines have been staging a sit-in protest for about 40 days, demanding resolution of multiple pending grievances related to employment, wages and working conditions. Most parts of Rajasthan are likely to witness mainly dry weather over the next three to four days, with a slight rise in temperatures and the possibility of heatwave conditions in some areas, the meteorological department said on Thursday. Most places in Rajasthan recorded maximum temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius during the day, indicating intensifying heat conditions. (PTI) However, a weak western disturbance is expected to affect parts of the state on April 17, bringing light rainfall and thunderstorm activity with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places in Jaipur, Bharatpur and Bikaner divisions and adjoining regions. it said. The department said rainfall during the first week is likely to remain below normal, while it may be around normal in the second week. A man was hung upside down from a tree and brutally thrashed by a group of people on suspicion of bike theft in Rajasthan’s Barmer district, police said on Saturday. The incident took place in Bhakharpura village in Gudha Malani area on Friday, when the man, Shravan Kumar, who is a Dalit, was released on bail in a separate theft case. In a statement, Barmer Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Singh Meena said Kumar was arrested on December 29, after he was found stealing a bike at a local fair.  Sources said after Kumar was released on bail a few days ago, villagers accused him of stealing another bike. The man, however, denied the fresh charge against him.  On Friday, the villagers caught hold of Kumar, tied his hands, and hung him upside down from a tree. “The villagers then thrashed the man.
