Three others were hospitalised, officials said. Officials say the matter is being looked into. The mishap took place in IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited at around 5.30 am, Barnala DSP Satvir Singh said. A preliminary investigation suggested that the leaked gas appeared to be hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a highly toxic substance, and that the leakage was caused by an excessive use of hydrochloric acid (HCl) during a procedural operation, the official said. Anmol Chhimpa, a resident of Phoolkan in Haryana, was pronounced dead at the site. His body has been sent to the Barnala civil hospital for a post-mortem examination. The three workers found unconscious were taken to the BMC hospital in Barnala from where two of them were referred to the CMC Hospital in Ludhiana. The police in Punjab’s Barnala Monday claimed to have cracked the case of the kidnapping of a two-year-old child from the slums behind the grain market in the city within three days with the arrest of all nine accused. Among those arrested are Ravinder Kaur, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) based in Ludhiana; self-styled doctor Vikas Tiwari, who runs a hospital; Kaur’s son Kohinoor Singh; Damanpreet Singh; and Aditya. Damanpreet and Aditya were involved in an Rs 8 crore bank robbery in Ludhiana in June 2023 and have been out on bail since January 12, 2024. The other accused who were arrested include Manav Arora, Davinder Singh, Rohit, and Dashrath, who was booked in another case of kidnapping a child in Madhya Pradesh. All were produced in court and remanded to police custody for three days. Punjab’s government senior secondary schools are grappling with a severe shortage of school principals, with Mansa, Barnala, Moga and Sangrur being the worst hit, revealed the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF). Teachers’ Front data: Max principal posts vacant in Mansa, Barnala, Moga govt senior secondary schools As per the DTF, an association representing teachers of primary and secondary schools, Mansa tops the list of districts with 82% posts vacant, followed by Barnala with 76% vacancies.
