Work on Mahadayi basin projects delayed due to inaction of Centre: Karnataka CM

The government of Karnataka is ready to take up work in the Mahadayi basin. If the Union government were to issue all the necessary clearances today, we will start work tomorrow,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said at an event to distribute agricultural implements worth ₹400 crore to farmers from Belagavi revenue division, on April 20. “A major problem in farming is the reduced rainfall and dry land farming. We have to find a longstanding solution to this problem. It includes providing water through major and medium, minor and micro irrigation schemes. IIT-Madras builds Asia’s largest shallow wave basin

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has commissioned Asia’s largest shallow wave basin research facility to cater to research and industry requirements. The indigenously developed facility is located at Discovery — IIT-M’s satellite campus in Thaiyur, which is in the city’s suburb. The multidirectional shallow wave basin can handle complex wave and current interaction, addressing problems faced by Indian ports, waterways and coastal engineering issues.    The National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) has established the facility. The technology arm of the Shipping Ministry, which offers technological support to ports, Inland Waterways Authority of India and other institutions.  IIT-Madras Ocean Engineering department professor K. Murali said that henceforth, the country need not depend on technology from other countries to generate waves in a laboratory.  Except for a few items the rest of the componets of the shallow wave basin were made indigenously. “Most of the fabrications of the wavemaker were done in IIT-Madras,” he said.   Torsten Schlurmann from Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany, that runs the world’s largest wave-current flumes and basins …

National Board for Wildlife defers decision on Kalasa-Banduri project in Mahadayi basin

In a meeting held in New Delhi on January 30, the NBWL’s standing committee cited multiple reasons such as the matter pending before courts and non-receipt of approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority as the reasons for the postponement of the decision. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the Chairman of the NBWL, Yogendra Yadav, Minister for Forests and Ecology, is the chairman of the standing committee. Mr. Yadav headed the January 30 meeting. For use of forest land The proposal was for the use of around 11 hectares of forest land situated on the tiger corridor between Kali and Sahyadri tiger reserves.
