Harlem Globetrotters @100: Inspired Obama, stopped war, were ridiculously talented and slap-stick funny | Basketball News

A travelling chimpanzee trained to ace ten-pin bowling would have a suite in the hotel but there was no room for a very popular team of black basketballers known for their jaw-dropping skills and laugh-a-minute entertainment. This was America in the early part of the last century. Racism was rampant and the discrimination against Blacks was nauseatingly inhumane. Sports too, back then, was ghettoised. The blacks weren’t allowed on courts with whites, were told to play in their ‘hood and their competitions were officially called Negro Major League. But the team that was once seen less worthy than a chimp went on to change the world. That’s the Harlem Globetrotters, the pioneers of magical basketball, the kings who also doubled as court jesters. They were show-boaters and tricksters with incredible ball-skills. They didn’t win World Championships, but conquered hearts and ruled the minds of the world. Even decades after its birth in Chicago, the Harlem Globetrotters brand has survived. Estimates say they have put up shows in 127 countries and entertained close to 148 million …

WATCH VIDEO: Utterly crazy finish in NBA as Bulls beat Lakers with a buzzer-beater from Josh Giddey | Basketball News

Josh Giddey buried a miracle shot from beyond halfcourt at the final buzzer as the Chicago Bulls overturned an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 119-117 on Thursday night. The Associated Press reported, “Giddey’s buzzer-beating halfcourt heave capped what might be the wildest finish in the NBA this season.” The moment was met with some wild celebrations. The Bulls trailed 115-110 with 12.6 seconds remaining before delivering down the stretch with a wild sequence of plays. Patrick Williams hit a 3-pointer to trim the deficit back to two points before Giddey, who moments earlier had airballed a floater, stole LeBron James’ inbound pass. NBA champion Boston Celtics to be sold for a record $6.1 billion

Private equity mogul William Chisholm agreed to buy the Boston Celtics on Thursday in a deal that values the NBA’s reigning champions and the most-decorated franchise in league history at a minimum of $6.1 billion — the largest price ever for American professional sports team. If the deal is approved by the NBA’s board of governors this summer, the sale would top the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023. A Massachusetts native and graduate of Dartmouth College and Penn’s Wharton School of business, Chisholm is the managing partner of California-based Symphony Technology Group. Story continues below this ad “Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life,” Chisholm said in a statement. “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston — the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the …

How a Kylie Minogue concert can deny NBL side Perth Wildcats home advantage

In what could be a first in Australian basketball history, ten-time National Basketball League (NBL) champions Perth Wildcats could miss playing their finals game at their regular venue RAC Arena due to an upcoming concert of singer Kyle Minogue. The Wildcats, who are currently placed third in NBL, can feature in a home final next week if they maintain their third spot or placed fifth after their regular season match against Adelaide 36ers at RAC Arena on Friday this week. With the concert happening on February 15 and the stadium hosting a Bryan Adams concert on Sunday followed by Minogue’s team overtaking the stadium for a week , the most successful side in NBL history could be forced to play their home final games at the much smaller capacity Perth High Performance Centre stadium in Perth on Tuesday next week. “I’m super disappointed and angry. We are an anchor tenant at RAC Arena and are having to play at a sub-par venue as a result. I’m really frustrated with RAC Arena given they have booked …

Giannis Antetokounmpo gets 3 stitches on shooting hand and triple double on same night

Giannis Antetokounmpo had an intense game when Milwaukee Bucks faced Toronto Raptors on Monday, with the former NBA MVP needing three stitches to close a cut near the base of his right pinkie finger after an unfortunate injury. Despite the gruesome injury — which Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers said “kept bleeding” during the game — Antetokounmpo returned to the floor and closed out the game with a triple double, scoring 11 points, handing in 13 assists and nabbing 12 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks overwhelmed the Toronto Raptors 128-104. Antetokounmpo had picked up the injury after hitting his hand on the basketball rim while trying to block RJ Barrett’s dunk in the second quarter. “I’m fine. My finger is kind of numb, but I’m fine. I played the second half. It’s just stitches. I’m not going to overthink it,” Antetokounmpo, who is NBA’s leading scorer with 31.6 points, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. When asked if he would be able to play in the Milwaukee Bucks’ game against San Antonio Spurs …

Which NBA star did Denzel Washington rave about while promoting Gladiator II in Paris? | Basketball News

Double Oscar winner Denzel Washington, had once dreamt of becoming a professional American football player. But after a dizzying career in showbiz and charming the French, he was generous in his praise of Victor Wembanyama, while promoting Gladiator II in Paris. Showering praise on the San Antonio Spurs sky-scraper, Washington told L’Equipe, “It’s not fair someone that big can shoot from that far and be that good.” He was gleeful that the tall Frenchman had headed to Texas. “For him, sky is the limit. And the best thing that happened to him was going to San Antonio. He has one of the best coaches possible, in Gregg Popovich, who’s going to build him up step by step. It’s going to pay off. His best years are obviously ahead of him ” Coach Pop though, is recovering currently from a stroke he suffered in early November. Washington, further said, “Wembanyama reminds us that limitations in sports, like in life, are often self-imposed. NBA: Philadelphia 76ers centre Joel Embiid to miss out on $1 million for shoving reporter | Basketball News

2023 NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid was suspended by the organisation for three games after the Philadelphia 76ers’ center shoved a Philadelphia Inquirer columnist for writing about his son and late brother, while criticising his fitness. Embiid has yet to appear for the Sixers this season, with what the team is terming as left knee management. The USA Olympic team gold medal winner, who was set to earn $51.4 million this season, will now miss out on over $1 million in lost pay because of the suspension. “Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” the NBA’s head of basketball operations, Joe Dumars, said in a statement. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.” The altercation happened on Saturday after the Sixers lost to Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies 124-107. An Embiid-less Philadelphia has slumped to a 1-5 record in the Eastern Conference and …

How an Indian hoopster is learning to play rough and tough basketball in Serbia | Basketball News

Ulhas Koravi Satyanarayan remembers the call he received towards the end of July. The Indian hoopster, who had already played in European Leagues in Spain and Malta was waiting for the next window of opportunity when the surprise call arrived from Serbia. And three months later, he is now at Novi Pazar, getting used to the harsh winter ahead, and getting acclimatised to the league in basketball-mad Serbia. It is what Ulhas calls one place closer to realising his dream of playing in the NBA. “To be honest, the call was surprising because I was still exploring opportunities,” Ulhas tells The Indian Express. But the 26-year-old had reasons to be optimistic given his good records in the Moldova and Malta leagues where as a combo guard (playmaker and shooting guard), his versatility had stood out. The call up was a vindication of sorts for Ulhas and also that of Serbia — a powerhouse in the sport – putting their trust in an Indian. “Playing here means, you are rubbing shoulders with the best because one …
