A total of 35 Maoists surrendered before the security forces across five districts in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region on Tuesday, just hours before the Centre’s March 31 deadline to eliminate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) ends, officials said. Of them, 25 cadres, including 12 women, belonging to the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee of Maoists, surrendered in Bijapur district under the police’s ‘Poona Margem’ (from rehabilitation to social reintegration) initiative, IGP of Bastar Range, Sundarraj Pattlingam, said.  These 25 cadres were carrying a cumulative reward of Rs 1.47 crore. Sundarraj on Monday said Bastar today stands “very close to being considered Naxal-free” and the likelihood of a large-scale revival of the Maoist movement appears “extremely remote”. The statement came on the eve of the Centre’s deadline to eliminate Maoism in the country. Mr. Sundarraj said Bastar has historically been considered the strategic nucleus of the Maoist movement. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma recently said “96% of Bastar is free from Maoism and only 30 to 40 active cadres remain”.
