BJP sweeps Haryana municipal corporation polls, tastes victory in Hooda bastion

The BJP on Wednesday swept the municipal corporation polls, registering emphatic wins in Panchkula, Ambala and Sonipat, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini describing the outcome as a reflection of people’s trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Saini alleged that the incident was an attempt to intimidate political workers during election season. (HT File) (HT_PRINT) Barring Uklana, where a 23-year-old student won the municipal committee’s president post as an Independent candidate, the BJP swept other civic body polls. The saffron party clinched the president’s post in the municipal committee of Sampla, a stronghold of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Notably, the Congress had not fielded its candidate in Sampla for the civic polls. INLD and AAP, which contested in some wards, however, drew a blank. In the municipal polls, the BJP sought votes on the development plank while Congress focused on targeting the BJP on the issues of sanitation, drainage and corruption. Kerala local body polls: In Kozhikode Corporation, UDF plots a comeback in LDF bastion of half a century

Kerala local body polls: In Kozhikode Corporation, UDF plots a comeback in LDF bastion of half a century

A high-stakes electoral combat is brewing in the Kozhikode Corporation for the civic body elections on December 11, over a year after the city was bestowed India’s first UNESCO City of Literature title. Nevertheless, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is leveraging this status in the political arena, employing the achievement even as a counter to the anti-incumbency narratives of the rival Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An additional division has been created this time, taking the council strength from 75 to 76, and prompting all three fronts to fine-tune their strategies ward by ward in the tightly contested urban landscape. Buoyed by its long-standing grip over the corporation for around 45 years, the LDF enters the race with a clear advantage: they represent four assembly constituencies in the city, and two of their representatives are State Ministers. Despite Congress leader M.K. Raghavan being elected four times as an MP from the region and scoring well even in the traditional Left divisions, the UDF has been unable to get …

In Raebareli, BJP Fights Hard To Breach Congress’ Last UP Bastion

Mr Gandhi’s challenger is the BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh. Raebareli: In this much-in-the-news Lok Sabha constituency, the Gandhi name is the backdrop against which every political debate takes place — whether for voters, for the Congress fighting to keep its bastion or for the BJP going all out for a win. Issues such as the Ram Temple, the Modi factor, the government’s free ration scheme, ‘pucca’ houses for the poor, stray cattle and the Congress’ allegation that the BJP will change the Constitution if it returns to power are all part of the election discourse. But the Gandhi factor looms large over it all. Such has been the Congress’ domination that it has lost Raebareli only thrice since Independence – in 1977, 1996 and 1998. Sonia Gandhi represented the constituency for four consecutive terms since 2004 and has now passed on the baton to her son Rahul Gandhi. The former Congress president, who suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the BJP’s high-profile minister Smriti Irani in the nearby family pocket borough Amethi, is …
