Top OTT Releases This Week: Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Shaitaan, The Idea of You, and Other

This week, we have a rich ott platter of grandeur, survival, black magic, journalistic nuances, unlikely romance, and abuse against women. The biggest release of all is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grandiose Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar on Netflix, which explores the pre-partition world of tawaifs (courtesans) in Lahore, who held a special social status and made a significant contribution to India’s struggle for Independence. Originally, Bhansali was planning on making a film on the subject, but since the storyline was too elaborate, he decided to make it a series instead. Next in line is the second season of Sonali Bendre’s show on the media industry, The Broken News. This show exposes the face of today’s biased media, which feeds on sensationalism and conveniently brushes aside the ethics of fair journalism. In terms of post-theatrical releases, we have Mollywood’s blockbuster Manjummel Boys, which is based on a true incident when a young boy fell into a dangerous cave and was rescued by his untrained friends. We also have Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan, in which a sinister man (played …

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar Review – There’s More Than The Blindingly Sumptuous Means Sanjay Leela Bhansali Employs

A still from Heeramandi. (courtesy: bhansaliproductions) Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first web series, an artful and overwrought female-led period drama, is crammed with everything that the director’s big-screen ventures are known for. It has massive and lavish sets, visual grandeur, intense emotions, stylistic flamboyance, sustained musicality and striking performances. Is there more? Yes, there is. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar reimagines 1940s Lahore and its red-light district in a manner far less intent on accuracy of detailing than on the overall effect of the enterprise. The show has passages of effulgent beauty. It also occasionally slides into tonally static, cinematically sterile stretches. But in the ultimate analysis, its strengths far outnumber its downsides. Bhansali is the creator, co-writer (with Vibhu Puri), editor and music director of the extravagant eight-episode Netflix show that economizes on nothing at all. It is filmed all the way like the widescreen spectacle that it is intended to be. Based on an original concept by Moin Beg, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar places the daily struggles of the fabled but exploited courtesans of Lahore …

(courtesy: Netflix India ) New Delhi: The much-awaited trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is out and is every bit as captivating as we had imagined. The trailer begins with a glimpse into the glittering, regal halls of Shahi Mahal where Mallikajaan (played by Manisha Koirala) rules over a house of courtesans. The next few scenes introduces us to the oh so gorgeous courtesans aka the diamonds of Heeramandi – Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal and Sanjeeda Shaikh. Their beauty is unmatched and so is the opulence and grandeur of Heeramandi. All is well in Mallikajaan’s world until threat in the form of Fareedan (played by Sonakshi Sinha) comes and brings tensions in the house to a boil.  =Amidst internal conflict in the house of Mallikajaan, the city outside is roiling with freedom fighters demanding India’s liberation from the British rule. Urging “murjewalis (courtesans)” to think as “mulkwalis (patriots) is Bibbojaan aka Aditi Rao Hydari as she says, “Sharafar humne chhor di, mohabbat ne …
