In a closely watched by-election in Maharashtra’s Beed district, the wife of slain sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was defeated in the race for the sarpanch post in Massajog village, reported the PTI. The result was declared on Wednesday following counting at the Kaij tehsil office. Returning Officer Santosh Karajwankar confirmed that Swarupanand Deshmukh secured victory by a margin of 92 votes. Ashwini Deshmukh, widow of the murdered sarpanch, had contested the election amid expectations of a sympathy wave. However, the electorate opted for Swarupanand Deshmukh, overturning the outcome of the previous election. In the last sarpanch poll, Santosh Deshmukh had narrowly defeated Swarupanand by just nine votes. As the Opposition in Maharashtra demanded that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde, who resigned as a minister on Tuesday, be named an accused in the Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case, sources in the special investigation team (SIT) that probed the case said it was unlikely that new names would be added to the chargesheet with the evidence in hand. “The chargesheet names eight accused against whom we have found evidence in connection with the murder of Santosh Deshmukh. Based on the evidence so far, no new names will be added. Unless some new evidence crops up, the chargesheet will have no new names,” a source from the SIT said. According to a report with Lokmat Times, the Additional District Magistrate of Beed has issued a prohibitory order as a precautionary measure in the district from March 3 to March 17. Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Monday formed the new Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in Beed district. The new SIT includes police officers Anil Gujar, Vijay Singh Jonwal, Mahesh Vighne, Anand Shankar Shinde, Tulshiram Jagtap, Manoj Rajendra Wagh, Chandrakant S Kalkute, Balasaheb Devidas Akhakore, Santosh Bhagwanrao Gitte. Basavaraj Teli will continue as the chairman of this SIT. Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was murdered on December 9 after he allegedly opposed an extortion attempt targeting an energy firm installing windmills in the area. The extortion attempt was reportedly led by local leader Vishnu Chate, who demanded Rs 2 crore from the company. Following a complaint by one Tukaram Aghav, the Parli police here on Sunday (January 5, 2025) registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Mr. Jarange over the remarks and on charges of creating a divide in the society.
