The bees and the birds, like us only

The bees and the birds, like us only

2 min readJul 10, 2026 06:15 AM IST First published on: Jul 10, 2026 at 06:15 AM IST Among the elements that constitute the homo sapiens’ self-definition, there is one that is often ignored. Human beings have an unending capacity for narcissistic conceit. The “inner life”, it has long been believed, is the province of very few animals. With reluctance, people acknowledge that “higher mammals” — elephants, primates, dolphins and some whales — are worth empathy. For lowly insects, though, the fascination is rarely with the individual. The ant colony and beehive are marvellous for their complexity, but the ant and the bee are merely constituents of a collective. It turns out that behind their exoskeletons, bees might be a lot more complex than people thought. A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that in certain settings, bumblebees react to certain tastes in seemingly similar ways to some mammals, including human babies — they seem to like sugar water, and retreat from saltiness. Researchers concluded that bees may have …

When the air gets muggy, these bees literally change colour | Pets-animals News

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Jun 1, 2026 04:58 PM IST Ever noticed how some insects seem to shimmer differently depending on the light? For one species of bee, it turns out the weather may be changing the look, too. Scientists have discovered that humidity can make certain iridescent bees shift colour — almost like tiny living mood rings. The research found that fine-striped sweat bees, which normally appear blue-green in dry conditions, can turn a more coppery green when the air becomes humid. The findings, published in Biology Letters, suggest this may not just be a quirky bee trick but a broader phenomenon in insects whose colours come from microscopic structures rather than pigments. When moisture changes the colour The discovery began somewhat accidentally. Researchers noticed that museum bee specimens sometimes dramatically changed colour when placed in humid chambers used to soften them for scientific handling. “It can be a bit alarming when you’re not expecting it,” Madeleine Ostwald, a functional ecologist at Queen Mary University of London, told Science News. Curious, the team decided …

Girl, 3, Thought There Were “Monsters” In Her Bedroom. Beekeeper Discovers 60,000 Bees

he beekeeper used a thermal camera to examine the walls in the 3-year-old’s bedroom When 3-year-old Saylor Class complained about monsters in her bedroom, her parents dismissed it as a figment of a child’s vivid imagination. However, BBC reported that their perspective soon shifted when a beekeeper found tens of thousands of honeybees above the girl’s bedroom. Saylor had been expressing concerns about “monsters in the wall” of her room at their farmhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Her mother, Ashley Massis Class, and her husband initially didn’t pay much attention to it, considering they recently watched the Pixar movie, Monsters, Inc. “We even gave her a bottle of water and said it was monster spray so that she could spray away any of the monsters at night,” Massis Class, a home designer told the BBC.  But the trick didn’t work, in the following months, Saylor grew adamant about something being inside her closet. The Dance of the Bees

Let me tell you about the waggle dance of the bees. The waggle dance, despite what it sounds like, is not a set of moves you bust out for a Chuck Berry song where you’re sharing the dance floor with two versions of Marty McFly. But this is actually the name given to a phenomenon that encapsulates the intelligence of these amazing little beings; something that they do on their daily foraging expeditions.  The swarms are tightly-knit in every sense of the word: they protect their queen and each other, and communicate closely to make sure every one survives. They head out in different directions in search of a sugar sources, important for their sustenance and growth. Upon return, they need to exchange information about their discoveries. And they do this through a dance! The hive is densely-populated with bees — all busy going about their business, but working together for the colony. After an exploratory expedition, there is usually one bee spinning around almost aggressively — significantly more so than its hive-mates. This excited bee …

Ceiling fans get costlier as BEE’s revised norms mandate star labelling

Ceiling fans would get costlier by 8% to 20% as the category has come under the ambit of mandatory star labelling from January 1, as per the revised Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) norms. Star labelling denotes energy savings of minimum 30% for one-star rated fans to over 50% for five-star rated fans. Though leading manufacturers such as Havells, Orient Electric and Usha International have welcomed the move, they also believe it would lead to cost increase of 5% to 20% as high energy efficient five-star rated fans will require new imported motors and electronic components. Under the new mandate, manufacturers would have to display the star ratings on their fans. The star rating is dependent on service value (air delivery in cubic metres per minute divided by energy consumption in wattage). ‘Superior products’ Terming it a “massive shift”, Orient Electric MD & CEO Rakesh Khanna said, now consumers will get access to a superior product that consumes far less energy. However, he added that there would be price increase to a certain extent as …
