Disclosure Day: This Steven Spielberg alien mystery is buried beneath a long chase and some poignant questions

When it’s Steven Spielberg, he can sell us anything. A killer shark in Jaws. Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. And, of course, aliens! From ET to Disclosure Day, the man can make us believe in almost anything. Which is why, even as an ardent admirer of the filmmaker, I came away slightly underwhelmed by his latest directorial. A still from Disclosure Day For reasons she cannot explain, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) begins experiencing strange abilities after a cardinal visits her home. She can suddenly read people’s minds and even alter what they see when they look into her eyes. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) is on the run after stealing a series of tapes containing evidence of what really happened to the extraterrestrial beings who landed on Earth. Pursuing them both is Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), the powerful head of Wardex. Why these two seemingly unrelated individuals are inexorably drawn towards each other forms the crux of the film. The film begins at a brisk pace and immediately …

In 27 states, more than 90 percent of samples were deficient in nitrogen (Image: Canva) India’s soil, once the quiet engine of its agricultural success, is showing unmistakable signs of strain. A new assessment by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), based on over 1.3 crore soil samples collected between 2023 and 2025 under the Soil Health Card programme, has found widespread depletion of key nutrients across the country. Nearly two-thirds of the samples tested low in nitrogen, and almost half lacked sufficient organic carbon – both essential for healthy crop growth. The findings point to a pattern of long-term soil fatigue, raising concerns about productivity, sustainability, and the future of food security in India. The results read like a diagnosis …

Farallon Slab Beneath Midwest Pulls Crust Downward, Causing Widespread Thinning

Farallon Slab Beneath Midwest Pulls Crust Downward, Causing Widespread Thinning

An underground structure beneath central United States has been observed dragging surface materials deep into the Earth. This movement has been linked to an old piece of crust lodged far below the Midwest. Researchers have said this action is pulling rocks from across the continent towards a funnel-shaped region. It is believed this process is causing parts of the crust to thin as material is drawn downward. This phenomenon has been found to affect areas beyond the immediate region. Underground slab tied to crust loss beneath Midwest According to the study published in Nature Geoscience, the phenomenon has been tied to the remains of a long-subducted tectonic plate known as the Farallon slab. This slab, which sits around 660 kilometres below the surface, was identified as the driving force behind what scientists refer to as cratonic thinning. Cratons are known to be the stable core regions of continental crust and upper mantle that usually do not undergo change. The seismic mapping project was led by Junlin Hua during his postdoctoral work at The University of …

NASA’s Study Suggests Life Could Thrive Beneath Ice in Mars

NASA’s Study Suggests Life Could Thrive Beneath Ice in Mars

NASA‘s latest study has sparked interest in the potential for microbial life beneath the icy surface of Mars. Although direct evidence of life on the Red Planet remains elusive, researchers suggest that meltwater trapped beneath layers of frozen water could create a suitable environment for microbial existence. Their findings, stem from sophisticated computer modelling that highlights how sunlight might penetrate water ice to enable photosynthesis in shallow meltwater pools. Understanding Martian Ice Mars features two primary types of ice: frozen water and frozen carbon dioxide. This study focuses on water ice, formed from ancient snow that accumulated dust during previous ice ages on the planet. As the dust particles absorb sunlight, they can raise temperatures within the ice, leading to melting beneath the surface. This process is significant because while the thin Martian atmosphere typically causes water ice to sublimate directly into gas, conditions beneath the ice layer could facilitate melting. Analogies with Earth Research on Earth shows that dust particles can create cryoconite holes—small water pockets within ice that provide habitats for microorganisms. Phil …

Upkeep of medians beneath metro viaduct in doldrums

KMRL says it is struggling to maintain medians beneath the Kochi metro viaduct for want of sponsorship and corporate social responsibility funds. A scene from Elamkulam. | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT Faced with flak for ill-maintained medians beneath the Kochi metro viaduct, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) said it was struggling to maintain them for want of sponsorship and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. Funds paucity has also affected the readying of vertical gardens mulled in every 10th metro pillar in the 27-km corridor. This has led to the setting up of huge advertisement boards on almost all metro pillars, which, the police said, often distracted motorists. At the accident-prone curve at Elamkulam on SA Road, over a dozen two-wheeler riders had died during the past three years, they added. Informed sources said the firm entrusted with landscaping medians beneath the metro corridor found it extremely difficult to get sponsors for maintaining them. “Many shops and other institutions that came forward to sponsor the initiative backtracked later and stopped paying the agreed amount. This led …
